Description
Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore “Blowing in from Chicago” Blue Note BLP 1549.
This is the original Van Gelder-etched (“RVG”), deep-groove, flat- rim mono pressing of Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore’s “Blowing in from Chicago” on the 47 West 63rd New York 23 labels of Blue Note BLP 1549. “Ear” or P present in deadwax.
Get a taste of that original Blue Note first pressing magic. No reissue will ever sound as good.
Here, a worn-looking vinyl record with diminished surface gloss plays much better than it looks. Several hairline marks but no feel-able scratches. There is very low-level surface noise present on some tracks beneath piano and bass solos, but as with all powerfully-recorded Blue Note first pressings, it does not deter from the enjoyment of the music. Many spindle hole marks. This is an incredibly dynamic and powerful sounding LP. An early and rare, pre-1958 Flat Rim disc.
VINYL: Side one: hairline marks but no feel-able scratches. Largely clean with occasional pops and ticks. Some low-level surface noise. One piano solo presents minor distortion. Side two: hairline marks but no feel-able scratches; low level surface noise, but largely clean, occasional ticks. A very dynamic recording. #3 slight knocks that repeat then disappear. Another piano solo with slight distortion in upper registers.
COVER: The 47 West 63rd, St., New York 23 Frame cover (Original Jacket) is in very good condition, excellent gloss. Two-inch seam split on top (taped), one-inch seam split right-top corner (taped), half-inch split (not taped) center bottom, one-inch seam split (taped) lower-right corner. Minor peeling on length of jacket’s right side. Left upper corner small seam-split (taped); left-lower corner slight wear. Back cover various taping apparent. Minor aging and discoloration. Personnel includes Cliff Jordan, John Gilmore, Horace Silver, Curly Russell, Art Blakey.
This LP was play-tested on a high-end system consisting of Music Hall MMF-7.3 turntable/Ortofon Bronze cartridge/Music Hall Moo Mat, Heed Audio Elixir integrated amplifier, Heed Quasar Phono stage and Quad S2 speakers.
