Closing Time by Tom Waits, 1973 Asylum Records SD5061 LP. *Bonus* Nighthawks At The Diner - Double LP by Tom Waits, 1975 Elektra 7E 2008
This auction is for Closing Time by Tom Waits on LP. This is the 1973 original release. The jacket is in vg++ condition with only a little light ring-wear on the front cover. The vinyl visually grades vg++, it is play-tested and it sounds great. The first side looks in ex(-) condition and sounded like it. This side played strong nice and quiet in between songs and in the quieter passages. The second side grades vg++ with a couple paper scuffs. This side still sounded great, I heard a little occasional light surface noise but nothing that was louder then the music and nothing that repeated annoyingly. The side 1 label has a rare imperfection. It has a double print of the LP information, which leaves a ghosting effect. Side 2 of the label is perfect. This is a really great record. Check the pictures and my feedback and bid with confidence. The second LP in the auction is Nighthawks At The Diner. The gatefold is in vg++ condition with wear to the bottom front corner near the spine, being the only blemish to mention. 3 out of 4 sides grade vg++ or better. Side 2 is were the problem is. I noticed a pretty good blemish to the first song on the second side. I play-tested this side and sure enough the first track skips 2 to 3 times. It doesn't pop loud or anything, it just jumps a couple words in the spoken intro each time it skips. The rest of the side and the other 3 sides (which are also play-tested) are really enjoyable, this is a great LP. I'm only selling as a bonus because of the skips. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION It starts with a sunrise, it ends with "one star shining," and in between Closing Time contains an honest year's worth (1973, to be exact) of sweet, melodic, vintage Tom Waits--minus some of the vocal growl and thematic grit of his later stuff (but you can see it coming). Waltzes, lullabies, blues, jazz, you name it. Driving songs and drinking songs, even an honest to gosh country tune: "Rosie." There are torchers ("Lonely"), scorchers ("Ice Cream Man"), and back-porch senior citizen love songs ("Martha"): "Those were the days of roses/Poetry and prose, and/Martha, all I had was you and all you had was me." Other standouts are "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" (guess what--he does!) and "Grapefruit Moon," in which Waits croons: "Every time I hear that melody, something breaks inside." Hang on to your hearts and hats, folks.
