Oklahoma psychedelic rockers Flaming Lips cleaned their sound up a lot since their 1995 masterpiece Clouds Taste Metallic. This was the last time they took the musical approach of two guitars, bass and drums rocked out in a thrillingly propulsive manner. This is partly because it was because guitarist Ronald Jones' final album with the band. Whilst Flaming Lips have felt the need to evolve and diversify their sound - be it artistic curiosity or fear of ending up as alt-rock landfill - there's something truly magical about this era where they are a decade in operating at the top tier of space rock. The second track is particularly outstanding and a masterclass of just how much to thrash at your drum kit without spoiling the mix. There's some wigout moments too that would make Pink Floyd proud.
