Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This lovely and very rare LP from French Columbia (SAXF 231, French Pathé-Marconi pressing, blue/silver label – ED1, stereo, dowel spine) features Album 1 of conductor André Cluytens and the l' Orchestra de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire's legendary, sumptuous and glittering Ravel cycle, produced by the great René Challan and engineered by Walter Ruhlmann, all sessions held in the spacious acoustics of the Salle Wagram, Paris.

The sound quality is truly extraordinary and from the very first gripping bars of Bolero one has the sensation of being in the very presence of the Paris Conservatory Orchestra.

Album 1 includes dazzling performances of the following works:

Bolero – rec. on 30 November 1961

(with Marcel Galiègue, trombone solo)

Rapsodie Espagnole – rec. 29 November 1961

La Valse – rec. 27 November 1961

Incidentally, the engaging cover art reproduces the “Costume de Derain pour ‘La Valse’”. There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in French only, by Jean Cotté.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the heavy cardboard “baguette”-style jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a 6” seamsplit to the upper edge (from the dowel to the midway point), as well as discoloration, more so to the rear panel. However, the album remains solid and very presentation worthy – overall, this still rates as a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the dowel spine is VERY GOOD. There is a 2” seamsplit to the lower edge of the paper sleeve and the text on the dowel is faded, but everything remains solidly intact.

The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. While there are a few slightly noisy passages, in general the playback is quite fine. However, those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
