Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and exceedingly rare LP from La Voix de son Maitre (ASDF 606, French Pathe-Marconi pressing, large dog red/white semi-circle label, stereo, dowel spine) features conductor André Cluytens and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s magnificent account of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major Op. 55 “Eroica”, recorded in the warm and spacious acoustics of Grünewaldkirche, Berlin in December 1958 (producer: René Challan / engineer: Horst Lindner).
Though it preceded von Karajan’s more famous traversal, recorded during the winter of 1961/62 for Deutsche Grammophon, Cluyten’s Beethoven Symphony cycle never equaled the latter in terms of sales or reputation, the DG set remaining the most widely sold, both in terms of distribution and volume, ever released. But if French EMI’s marketing resources could not match the high-powered campaign mobilized for Karajan, it could still take pride in having issued arguably the finest integral cycle of the post-war era. Expansive, resilient, and powerfully moulded, Cluyten’s Beethoven boasts a deeply burnished sound allied to an unflagging energy and concentration – nowhere more so than in this thrilling, and deeply impressive “Eroica”. In short, it is an enthralling performance, with the Berlin Philharmonic on tremendous form throughout, sweeping all before it. The sound is outstanding, rich and spacious, well matching the breadth and depth of the performance.
Incidentally, the superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in French only, were written by William Mann.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the heavy cardboard “baguette”-style jacket is VERY GOOD. There is some cracking along the top edge (@ 5”) that amounts to a discreet seamsplit. There is also general edgewear and some mild discoloration to the rear panel. However, there are no bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and striking in appearance – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the dowel spine is EXCELLENT. There are no seamsplits and the dowel sleeve remains in fine condition – the gold lettering is not so crisp, but everything remains solidly intact.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not CD silent, in general the playback is superb. There are no tics, but nonetheless the surfaces are not completely silent. Thus, if you require flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy of an extremely elusive title.
