ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This lovely LP from La Voix de son Maitre (CVA 665, French Pathe-Marconi pressing, large dog red/white semi-circle label, stereo, dowel spine, baguette-style jacket) features conductor André Cluytens and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s glorious account of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major Op. 68 “Pastorale”, recorded in the warm and spacious acoustics of Grünewaldkirche, Berlin on 2, 3, and 9 March 1960 (producer: René Challan / engineer: Horst Lindner).

Though it preceded von Karajan’s more famous traversal, recorded during the winter of 1961/62 for Deutsche Grammophon, Cluyten’s Beethoven Symphony cycle never equaled the latter in terms of sales or reputation, the DG set remaining the most widely sold, both in terms of distribution and volume, ever released. But if French EMI’s marketing resources could not match the high-powered campaign mobilized for Karajan, it could still take pride in having issued arguably the finest integral cycle of the post-war era. Expansive, resilient, and powerfully moulded, Cluyten’s Beethoven boasts a deeply burnished sound allied to an unflagging energy and concentration. And this “Pastorale” Symphony is ecstatic and truly inspired from first bar to last. In short, it is a magnificent performance, with the Berlin Philharmonic on tremendous form throughout, sweeping all before it. The sound is outstanding, rich and spacious, well matching the breadth and depth of the performance.

Incidentally, the lovely cover art was executed by Martin Engelman, while the superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in French only, were written by Dorel Handman.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the heavy cardboard “baguette”-style jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a a small crush and tear to the lower-right corner, as well as minor bumping at the other corners and discoloration. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and striking in appearance – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the dowel spine is VERY GOOD. There is a 1” seamsplit to the left side of the paper sleeve, but that is all and some discoloration/spotting to the same. Otherwise, the dowel sleeve remains in fine condition – the gold lettering perfectly legible, and everything solidly intact.

The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. While there are a few slightly noisy passages, in general the playback is quite fine. However, those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
