Description
In 1977, El Gigante Del Sur (Inca ) made its debut with Quique and Papo Lucca’s orchestra, sharing the bill with singers Miguelito Ortiz and Luigi Texidor. The following year, Texidor would join Bobby Valentín’s band, thus paving the way for vocalist Tito Gómez’s return to the Ponceña fold. On her first recording with Ponceña, Yolanda showcases her versatility in the classic bolero of the Cuban filin movement, “Soy Tan Feliz,” composed by José Antonio Méndez, and the merengue “Si No Me Meto” by Francisco Alvarado “Chalina”—the story of Marcela, a woman searching for her beloved Joaquín at the Cantera de Ponce, only to confront him when she learns he was out partying. And yet, Yolanda’s most powerful track on *El Gigante Del Sur* is the guaguancó “Rumba En El Patio.” Here she demonstrates her talent as an authentic sonera, capable of improvising like the genre’s greatest names, a worthy successor to Luigi on La Sonora’s most danceable tracks. Although she would go on to record with La Sonora again during the 1990s, her departure from Luigi’s group was a matter of great respect. On *El Gigante Del Sur*, she lent her voice to the hits “Boranda,” “Noche Como Boca 'E Lobo,” and “Omelé.”
