Szell's recordings on Columbia are consistently superior and it's because he heard the marvelous recorded sound done with AKG microphones during his tour in Europe. Out of Szell's insistence, Columbia used 5 of the AKG omni microphones he bought back from Europe. That perhaps explains why his recordings are typically spaciously accurate, tight-controlled without the use of many spot microphones!
