Columbia SAX 2405 Blue/Silver - Dvorak New World Symphony – Giulini

This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.

RECORD GRADING

EXCELLENT

The surfaces of both sides of this record are quite excellent; they are very clean and gleaming. Only on Side 1 are there any hairlines, just a couple. The record plays throughout with almost no surface sound at all – much appreciated in the many very quiet passages.

I noted one fault. At the beginning of side 1 between 45 seconds and 1 minute there are 7 light repetitive pops but I really cannot see anything which would cause them. Perhaps there is a pressing fault in the grooves.

Thereafter the entire record plays with virtually no unwanted sound.

The recording is stunning and, on this record, one that can be thoroughly enjoyed without interference; just the fault I refer to above, which is quickly forgotten.

COVER GRADING

GOOD

The cover is of the heavy card and, structurally, is better than good. The corners are only lightly scuffed and the faces are undamaged. It is, however, graded Good because both top and bottom edges have split; the top for almost half its length, and there is some soiling, particularly to the unlaminated back. I am sure it can easily be made much better
