The story of Milt Gabler’s Commodore label, which began as a record store on 52nd Street in 1926 and was launched as the first American Jazz label in 1938, originally pressing 10 and 12-inch 78 records.

Under the supervision of legendary producer, writer and critic Michael Cuscuna, all original Commodore masters in this Mosaic collection have been transferred onto digital tape, utilizing differing approaches depending on the characteristics of the source material, with careful attention paid to making the finest possible master for each session.

Pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Each box set comes with a perfectly preserved booklet featuring dozens of archival photographs, including interviews with Milt Gabler, Michael Cuscuna, Dan Morgenstern, and others. Includes complete recording locations and dates, personnel, and master prefix session numbers.

Also included is a 68-page master discography researched and compiled by Vincent Pilote of the Rutgers University Institute of Jazz Studies.

Box Set Number One is comprised of 23 phonograph records and includes the complete Commodore Jazz recordings from 1938 to 1943, featuring the following performers:

Teddy Wilson, Bud Freeman, Billie Holiday, Willie The Lion Smith, Jelly Roll Morton, Coleman Hawkins, Pee Wee Russell, Fletcher Henderson, Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, Fats Waller, Big Sid Catlett, George Wettling, and many others.

Accompanying booklet is 64 pages.

Box Set Number Two is comprised of 23 phonograph records and includes the complete Commodore Jazz recordings from 1943 to 1945, featuring the following performers:

Hot Lips Page, Big Sid Catlett, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Pee Wee Russell, Eddie Condon, Cozy Cole, Zoot Sims, Teddy Wilson, Billy Taylor, Don Byas, Jess Stacy, Bob Teagarden, and many others.

Accompanying booklet is 48 pages.

Box Set Number Three is comprised of 20 phonograph records and includes the complete Commodore Jazz recordings from 1938 to 1957, including addendums to the first two sets, featuring the following performers:

Dave Tough, Billie Holiday, Gene Krupa, Stuff Smith, Pee Wee Russell, Bud Freeman, Red Norvo, Teddy Wilson, Don Byas, George Wettling, Ike Quebec, Milt Hinton, Eddie Condon, Wild Bill Davison, Mel Powell, Sidney Bechet, Willie The Lion Smith, Oscar Pettiford, Walter Page, and many others.

Accompanying booklet is 48 pages.

The only flaws on these sets are slight scuff marks at the top corner of each box (see photo), and one of two boxes from set number one is detached, but otherwise in near-perfect condition.

These box sets are a rare and vivid snapshot of a critical period in the history of American Jazz and would be a prize in the catalog of any serious Jazz collector.
