In 1925, the eminent conductor Walter Damrosch commissioned Gershwin to compose a piano concerto for the New York Symphony Society. Many feel that the Concerto in F is Gershwin’s finest orchestral work. Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, then under exclusive contract and with its own label (the famous "Potato Head"), records Gershwin's recently premiered Concerto in F, the first piece of American music to be issued on three discs in an album.
Here is that first historic recording of Gershwin's Concerto in F. All three records are in excellent condition. There are no playing issues whatsoever. Being stored for many decades, you may wish to clean the oxidation away, but there is absolutely no decomposition or decay. The green and gold album is slightly bumped at the extremities, with a quarter inch tear on the top spine, but still shines after 76 years, with the gold lettering crisp and the album strongly bound. The inner sleeves are perforated, but somehow remain completly intact to the album. The third sleeve is torn, but fully bound. The reinforced edging on the sleeves is part of the original release, not added later.
Concerto In F was recorded September 15 and 17, 1928 in New York. The Paul Whiteman Orchestra with the following musicians: Charles Margulis, Harry Goldfield, Eddie Pinder (tp); Bix Beiderbecke (c); Boyce Cullen, Wilbur Hall, Bill Rank, Jack Fulton (tb); Frank Trumbauer, Chester Hazlett, Irving Friedman, Rube Crozier, Roy Maier, Charles Strickfaden (reeds); Kurt Dieterle, Matty Malneck, Mischa Russell, John Bouman, Charles Gaylord, Mario Perry (vln); Roy Bargy (p); Mike Pingitore (bj); Mike Trafficante (sb); Min Leibrook (tu); George Marsh (perc); Lennie Hayton (cel).
Extremely rare, unheard of in this condition.
