Description
Coon Sanders Nighthawks 1925 Radio air check FLEXO 78 rpm RARE broadcast record JAZZ
Offered here is a rare (possibly unique) c.1925 FLEXO 78 rpm radio air check recording of “Summer Night” performed by “’THE MERRY OLD CHIEF’ and his NIGHT HAWK ORCHESTRA.” The recording is an air-check of their ending song from one of their broadcasts, as it has the goodnights at the end. The other side has the evening sing-offs from many of the other associated broadcasting stations who carried the program all across the country.
In 1925, the Night Hawks were broadcasting a midnight radio program six nights a week from Kansas City radio station WDAF. It was advertised as “The Enemies of Sleep.” WDAF was part of the first coast-to-coast network of radio stations. These were often wired connections from city to city. In the second side of the record “Voices From Air” you can hear various stations all signing off for the night including WDAF, KFKX, WBAP, WHB and WSB.
This “flexible” 10” 78rpm record is in very good condition as shown, with some blemishes that seem to be more like stains in the rubber-like material. They play through fine but are audible as can be heard in the accompanying video of excerpts from this record.
Flexo records were invented around 1925 by Jesse J. Warner of Kansas City, Missouri. They were first produced by the Warner Record Company from 1925 to 1927, then the Wabine Company from 1927 to 1929, and finally by Pacific Coast Records after having relocated to San Francisco, California. Flexo discs are pressed in a flexible translucent plastic material, in an array of different colors, rather than traditional shellac. The newspaper clipping is NOT part of this auction, but included here as historical reference.
