Anybody who plays records on the radio for a living will tell you one of the disc jockey’s biggest rewards is seeing youngsters emerge from obscurity into full-blown stardom. In the many years I’ve worked at our C & W station in Richmond I’ve seen hundreds of boys and girls burst into the top ranks of the music business overnight. Very often one record is all it takes.

Other performers, often unknown out of their own home towns, must do it the hard way. You might say they evolve into national recognition. Stardom seldom comes without a lot of tough going. Hurried trips to remote show dates—too many over-cooked hamburgers and too many cups of day-old, luke-warm coffee—too much sleeping in the car between dates when a few hours rest on a real bed would be sheer luxury—too many broken buttons on too many shirts left at the laundry in that last town. (Of course, they offered “one-day service”).

What’s the reason for all this? Why do hundreds, maybe even thousands live like this year after year? Why don’t they settle down to a home and family like the rest of us? Actually, there’s a pretty simple answer—or answers. First off, the dedicated country singer knows that some of his number will develop into stars almost every week. In recent months we’ve seen Jack Greene, the Ernest Tubb drummer, move from the back row of the band to “front and center,” a solid hit as a singer. And, the Texas Troubadour is glad to see one of his road show unit move into star territory. Bill Anderson is said to have discovered Connie Smith in a little town in Ohio on a Sunday afternoon. And don’t forget that Elvis Presley plunked down his own hard-earned money for his first records to be made in that Memphis recording studio.

The next headline attraction to reach the status of star-billing might just come from the group you are about to hear in this album. For that reason we’d like for you to meet The Country Cavaliers. Because, right here you’re getting a sort of preview of the group that could easily spawn some of country music’s next stars.

Thru Virginia and in the surrounding states most folks consider The Country Cavaliers as a group of musicians who would “rather sing than eat.” Luckily, their singing keeps them eating very well, but any one of them would gladly pass up mealtime in order to entertain.

The Country Cavaliers appear regularly on WXEX-TV in Richmond. Their weekly Sunday night shows, hosted by genial Steve Richardson, Jr., who helped arrange for this album session, continues to win them new friends all the time. Chances are you’ll join the crowd when you hear and meet… The Country Cavaliers.
