Transcendence
1988 was an incredible year for metal, both in the secular and Christian markets: epic progressive releases from Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime) and Fates Warning (No Exit) topped the bill along with Metallica’s breakthrough album And Justice for All and Iron Maiden’s epic concept piece Seventh Son of a Seventh Son; Christian metal pioneers Stryper would release their highly commercially successful 4th album In God We Trust along side of Barren Cross’s Atomic Arena and fledgling metal band Sacred Warrior released their debut album Rebellion, which many considered to be their best. Amidst all this brilliance came the second album from Crimson Glory, an obscure and mysterious metal band from Florida. Little did anyone know at that time that this recording would become one of the most adored and revered discs in the underground metal scene and that these guys would become a huge catalyst in a the revolutionary reaction in metal that would eventually produce the modern progressive metal movement.
In fact, many think that these guys – along with Queensryche and Fates Warning – were the progenitors of progressive metal as it is known today. Unlike Queensryche – who went in a much more commercial, yet successful direction with Operation Mindcrime – Crimson Glory held tight to their metal roots, twisting and turning the sounds just ever so slightly to give the listener something new and exciting without sacrificing the powerful metal of the past. Midnight had perfected his vocal approach here, but still wondered pretty far into the upper register, especially on “Red Sharks,” which was probably the heaviest, fastest, but perhaps the weakest track on this disc. The rest of this was superb. Better production, mature songwriting and more song variety and dynamic contrast. The solos just shredded. The lighter moments and ballads ruled as well. “Painted Skies” was a touching, yet dark piece about trying to “fly away” from a painful reality. The power ballad “Lonely” was another masterpiece that started out slowly and built nicely to conclusion, with lots of beautiful vocal harmonies along the way. Just listen to the passion in “Burning Bridges.” It was on these later tracks where the keyboard really contributed to the sound. “Eternal World” was a speedy power metal rocker, but the lead guitar attacks on this one are still killer, just listen to the end section where the pounding drum and snare attacks battle with the lead guitars. Phenomenal! The title track closed out the album in a very hauntingly Queensryche fashion. One could even hear the Led Zep influence as well here in the vocal style. The artwork was fabulous and the lyrical content nicely presented. This band was truly blessed, but unfortunately could not stay intact and was never really able to realize their full potential in the 90’s. Still, this remains a classic in the genre.
