CONDITION: Brand new vintage condition from a smoke-free and pet-free home. The boxes have minor shelf wear on their edges and slight discoloration on the tops due to age. Alice's Adventures has a bit more wear on the corners and a small black mark on the bottom, right corner.
DESCRIPTION: This rare set of 8 vintage LPs and 2 facsimile volumes of both the 1865 first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the 1872 first edition of Through the Looking-Glass provide the full story of Alice's Adventures. The two boxed sets are as follows:
Riverside presents Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the Lewis Carroll classic complete on 4 LP records read and sung by Cyril Ritchard. The original music score was by Alec Wilder and played by the New York Woodwind Quartet. This includes a facsimile volume of the rare 1865 first edition of the book. This edition was produced exclusively for Crown Publishers and recorded in New York City during the spring and summer of 1957.
It all really happened that way, and the afternoon itself -- July 4, 1862 -- Carroll remembered as the most golden and beautiful he had ever known, with a brilliant blue sky and pale green willows hanging over the stream. He was just thirty at the time and a mathematics professor at Oxford. Thus began the story of Alice in Wonderland. Alice herself was along, perhaps not the real Alice as she appears in the book, but an Alice for whom Carroll had a deep and lasting affection. She had dark hair cut in bangs across her round sweet face. Her name was Alice Liddell and she was seven. She was Secunda of the gentler tones. Her older sister, Lorina, was "Imperious Prima," while Edith the younger, became Tertia the interrupter. To help Carroll with the rowing was his friend Duckworth, and the five of them were a merry crew indeed. When Carroll succumed at last to the begging of the happy voices for a story, Alice played herself, helping out now and then with a priceless bit of dialogue which no one but a seven year old could possibly have invented. Home once more, Alice in parting begged Carroll to write some of it down for her that she might read it when she wished. And he began that very evening. Carroll poured into the book all that was himself, all his interests -- his loves, his ideals. Mathematics, his greatest love, showed up as nonsense -- but nonsense with a peculiar sort of reason behind it. Alice's "four times five are twelve, four times six are thirteen" is a legitimate reference to the eighteen (or twice-nine) system of numbers.
Murray Hill presents Through the Looking-Glass and What Alive Found There, the Lewis Carroll classic complete on 4 LP records read and sung by Cyril Ritchard. The original musical score was by Alec Wilder and played by the New York Woodwind Quintet. This includes a facsimile volume of the rare 1872 first edition of the book. This edition was produced exclusively for Murray Hill Records and recorded in New York City in July 1964.
Seven years passed between the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. By 1872, when Through the Looking-Glass was published, Alice Pleasance Liddell was seventeen, very much a young lady and no longer the elfin, ingenious child whose companionship had so won the heart of Lewis Carroll and inspired the Alice books. Indeed, Carroll makes this abundantly clear in the rather melancholy poem at the beginning of Through the Looking-Glass. But if the loss of the youthful enthusiasm of Alice Liddell and his sisters Lorina and Edith weighed heavily on his heart, Alice's adventures in Looking-Glass Land do not reflect it. This sequel is every bit as charming as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and a great deal more non-sensical. Of course to refer to Carroll's characters, descriptions and dialogues as "nonsense" is not strictly accurate. For with his logic and order, Carroll's zaniest situations contain a great deal of sense.
Cyril Ritchard has enjoyed stardom on three continents and in the brave new world of television. He will be remembered by children and adults alike as that piratical stumblebum, Captain Hook, scourge of small boys and Indian maidens, who menaced Mary Martin throughout "Peter Pan" both on-stage and on TV. Mr. Ritchard is one actor who finds himself completely at home tossing off a song in a musical comedy, wringing tears from a tragedy, or dropping epithets with abandon in an Oscar Wilde drawing-room Farce.
