Description

The Dame Nellie Melba First Recordings - Historic Masters An utterly delightful collection of recordings. There's something almost eldritch about cylinder recordings, even when transferred to other formats: it's something I can only describe as being like 'hearing' a ghost. ** Info from the Interne ** A highly sought-after, limited-edition vinyl box set (Historic Masters HM NM1-NM8) of 78-rpm records. The set features the legendary Australian soprano’s earliest recording sessions, pressed directly from rediscovered original metal masters. History and Discovery: The Sessions: Dame Nellie Melba’s pioneering recording sessions took place in her London flat at Great Cumberland Place in March and October 1904. She originally resisted the recording process, but the resulting discs immortalized the height of her vocal prowess. The Rediscovery: The original wax and metal masters for these 1904 sessions sat virtually untouched in a German vault for over a century. Historic Masters, a specialist preservation society, used these newly discovered metal parts to strike vinyl pressings that offered far clearer sound quality than older commercial copies. The Collection:
Format: The release consists of 8 double-sided 78-rpm vinyl records. Repertoire: It includes classic tracks such as Gounod's Ave Maria, Nymphes Et Sylvains, and Sweet Bird That Shun'st the Noise of Folly. PLEASE NOTE: These disks need to be played with a stylus/cartridge that has a profile made for the reproduction of 78 records. Also, because the original RPM of the cylinders used as source material can't be accurately determined, having a turntable with a pitch-correction control is desirable. Also (and very importantly) as these are vinyl, rather than shellac, pressings, and as such are not suitable for use on vintage wind-up gramophones as the weight of such a player's head, when combined with its needle, will permanently damage the playing surfaces.
