ACCORDING TO THE INDIVIDUAL WE ACQUIRED THIS ITEM FROM, THIS LP ALBUM COMES FROM THE ESTATE OF A WELL-KNOWN DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE REVIEWER (THE SELLER WOULD NOT REVEAL HIS IDENTITY).  WHILE WE WERE UNABLE TO EXTRACT THE NAME OF THE REVIEWER IN QUESTION,  WE ARE CONVINCED THAT THE PERSON IS NONE OTHER THAN THE LEGENDARY JAZZ GURU ►NAT HENTOFF, BEING THAT THE ITEM WAS ACQUIRED WITHIN WEEKS FROM HIS PASSING (JANUARY 2017) AND MOST LIKELY AS A RESULT OF HIS ESTATE LIQUIDATION. WHAT IS REMARKABLE ABOUT THIS AND OTHER ITEMS COMING FROM THE SAME SOURCE (WHICH ARE ALL PROMOTIONAL ITEMS OR REVIEWER COPIES) - IS INCREDIBLE STATE OF PRESERVATION. Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move -- Brubeck's record company wasn't keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz's rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond's ubiquitous "Take Five," Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. That's a testament to Brubeck and Desmond's abilities as composers, because Time Out is full of challenges both subtle and overt -- it's just that they're not jarring. Brubeck's classic "Blue Rondo à la Turk" blends jazz with classical form and Turkish folk rhythms, while "Take Five," despite its overexposure, really is a masterpiece; listen to how well Desmond's solo phrasing fits the 5/4 meter, and how much Joe Morello's drum solo bends time without getting lost. The other selections are richly melodic as well, and even when the meters are even, the group sets up shifting polyrhythmic counterpoints that nod to African and Eastern musics. Some have come to disdain Time Out as it's become increasingly synonymous with upscale coffeehouse ambience, but as someone once said of Shakespeare, it's really very good in spite of the people who like it. It doesn't just sound sophisticated -- it really is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it's amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. This belongs in even the most rudimentary jazz collection.

Well, folks, here 'tis. We proudly present the original “six eye” label pressing of the album with the single most instantly recognizable Jazz tune in the history: Dave Brubeck's "Take Five". This is the album that did more to popularize Jazz music worldwide than all Miles, Monk, Mingus, Coltrane and Rollins albums rolled into one.  The historical importance of this album cannot possibly be overestimated.Take our word - this IS a genuine piece of Jazz history, and the album of singular importance in modern American music.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 200:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam and spine (nothing significant)

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

-        The cover has a few visible scratch marks on the back side

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-        Cover has a few visible wrinkles along the spine

-        Cover has a minor annotation written next to the track listing (less than 1/8 square inch in size, total)

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
