Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. Importantly, and unlike so many, this copy is superbly pressed and plays beautifully throughout with no inherent manufacturing or usage faults. The record looks very little used.

Rarity: Moderate in terms of units made and sold. Harder to find with a lovely fresh little used record that is superbly pressed and a neat lesser aged cover and unsplit inner sleeve. Also this first issue copy includes the prized and now scarce Fan Club insert sheet which is guaranteed original. Also pressing pressing quality is a major factor. After the huge success of ‘Ziggy Stardust’, this album was eagerly anticipated and failed to disappoint. Like Ziggy (also on offer), this often has inherent pressing issues and crackle which this one has avoided. Many early copies bought by teenagers of the time, and many played to destruction on the most basic of equipment, and few were cover-protected. Clearly this one was purchased by a more careful owner and has suffered no mistreatments and only carefully (and lightly) played. This copy delivers in all departments.

Brief Info: From 1969 to 1973 represented, for me anyway, Bowie at his brilliant best, and this album, his sixth, was the most astonishing climax to his, and the glam-rock era. This is a very strong first issue and they are not found so easily as may think. This is a beautifully recorded album with real high-fidelity sound values. Shame sometimes let down by pressing quality, probably rushed out to meet the demand of the fast rising superstar. This plays beautifully with barely anything to fault, never, ever, take that for granted, a play-grade is essential on this, and all records as far as I am concerned. All nine of the self-composed tracks are pure Bowie classics, the tenth being a cover of the Jagger-Richards ‘Let’s Spend the Night Together’ – a brilliant version it is too. Any fan of this great artist could hardly fail to treasure this quite magnificent early-pressing of this groundbreaking work. The inclusion of the prized insert in totally unused or damaged condition is a massive plus as well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with a matt smooth surfaces. Made in England by Shorewood. Includes the lyric inner sleeve and the prized original Fan Club insert.

Cover Front: One of the most iconic and striking pieces of artwork put on an album cover. Here seen to very high advantage on this impressively preserved cover that has minimal wear or ageing. Yes marginally darkened only – most found are severely grubby, rubbed and badly aged which this has largely avoided. Any of the tiny few creases on the spine edge and only light. The actual artwork still superb and hardly blemishes with no sticker issues or rubbing. Few will better this classic front significantly.

Cover Back: Only mild traces of discolouration mostly near the left edge. Any grubbiness minimal also on a predominately white surface that is often seen browned, toned and dirty. Any hint of ageing polite and gentle. A small rub on the bottom left corner tip, any creasing minimal and very light, hardly any. Like the front, this even more wear-prone back will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside, again any hint of discolourtion faint. Any mild marks or blemishes are almost certainly from the print process (which I have seen several times on other copies of this cover)..

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with barely any wear, also the surfaces clean.

Bottom Edges: Very similar with only a the odd trace of discolouration on these vulnerable storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little and small, mostly near the back bottom outside edge on the fold. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine and lacking the usual discolouration most seem to acquire. Solid, thick and straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text is unworn and strong with no fading, also superbly centred as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs few, small and light, excellent shape mostly retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this iconic classic 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: an unlined card graphic/lyric inner with minimal wear and retaining deep colour. Any creasing few, small and light, the straight-cut side entrance edges still neat and sharp. All edges naturally intact and that is quite unusual. Most of any visual blemishes, bar slight light edge rubbing are natural in manufacture. Overall, this is one of the best inner sleeves I have seen for this album.

The Fan Club Insert: MINT(–): a single fold, four page insert that included a page made to be cut-off and sent to apply for David’s fan club. This is guaranteed original and in supreme condition. Hardly aged at all with no creasing, cutting of writing. All as-seen, this scarce insert will prove hard to find better – this is now becoming rare and elusive and only came with first issue copies.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant album – quite possibly my absolute favourite Bowie album – plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Never take that for granted, I have heard a number with unwanted, often quite loud crackle and distortion which this has avoided. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
