David Bowie's first live album release was this double set recorded in Philadelphia on his 1974 US tour. It would be easy to say that it caught him in transition but then again, when wasn't he? He'd just dispensed with the services of the Spiders and was promoting his darkly futuristic "Diamond Dogs" album, but as the world and his wife now knows he was also turning onto soul music which led him to his next album, the for me, much underrated "Young Americans" set.

There are clues to this on some of the arrangements and indeed songs here, with a slightly more punch-drunk than punchy cover of "Knock on Wood" and the surprise inclusion on the extended edition bonus tracks, of an Ohio Players' ballad, as well as the employment of a much bigger band, featuring notables such as David Sanborn on saxophone and Earl Slick on guitar, complete with prominently positioned backing singers all of which certainly fattens out the sound.

Somewhat dismissed out of hand on original release, I personally think it fits in nicely with Bowie's other cultural movements of the time, taking in the BBC TV documentary "Cracked Actor" and soon afterwards of course his first foray into movies in Nicolas Röeg's "The Man Who Fell To Earth", although you sense that any snapshot of him at this stage of his career would come out blurred.

Here though, he's in his element, commanding his band through an extended set focusing unsurprisingly on "Diamond Dogs" with "Ziggy Stardust" and "Aladdin Sane" also well represented but there's nothing from "Pin-Ups" and only one track from "Hunky Dory".

Highlights for me include the "Li-li-li" American single version of "Rebel Rebel", the boho lead-in to "The Jean Genie" and the sax-heavy take on "Cracked Actor", although he still can't nail "All The Young Dudes" the way Mott did and "Diamond Dogs" itself lacks bite.

I'm fine with his vocals which were criticised in some quarters at the time and love the textures added by the backing singers and percussion in particular.

Perhaps the Spiders deserved a live album to properly pull the curtain down on the whole "Ziggy" / "Aladdin" era, still my favourite from his entire career, but this "on with the show" document works great for me.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The records come in their original, custom, inner sleeves, which are UNIQUE to this album.

(c)         The records are pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·      COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.
