DAVID BOWIE - DAVID BOWIE Original UK PHILIPS LP SBL 7912 (1969)
Very happy to present one of the great Bowie rarities, his self titled original and only LP for Philips from 1969, the album that first gave us Space Oddity.
I have listened through this LP very carefully and can offer you the following play grade analysis:
SIDE 1
Space Oddity - opens with some moderate crackle and clicks becoming less intrusive as the music progresses. Odd light tick here & there.
Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed - Sounds fine - no noticeable deterioration or lessening in the audio of this, one of the LP’s highlights.
Letter to Hermione - This quieter number would give away potential defects, but this really sounds smashing with no distortion, ticks, clicks or even any noticeable surface/crackle.
Cygnet Committee - One isolated click at the beginning, again there’s no major nasties to report here. Like the whole of this LP, there’s no distortion of reduction in clarity, just light surface only noticeable from time to time.
SIDE 2
Janine - Again lovely, fresh audio but with occasional patches of crackle and some light ticks.
An Occasional Dream - Another quiet, acoustic number. Begins fine, has a few more ticks and clicks. Still not intrusive.
Wide Eyed Boy From Freecloud - The sweeping orchestration on this song sounds incredibly grand and powerful. Some surface and the occasional tick remains UNDER never OVER the music.
God Knows I’m Good - One click only. Very clear sound.
Memory Of A Free Festival - Another highlight, the first part, for a tune so quiet sounds just that - quiet! There are no audio nasties at all. Ditto Part 2, sounds magnificent. Nothing to report, Captain!!
SUMMARY
A lot of these songs sound a minimum EX, but due to some crackle patches and light ticks/clicks (usually isolated not bunched), I’m going an overall VG+ on the play grade. Remember - NO distortion, NO loud popping, NO hiss, NO sticking and NO jumps!
How Does It Look?
Both sides retain a good shine and there is not much dirt in these grooves. Were it not for 2 long surface marks spanning most of the length of Side 1, it would grade in the realm of a near EX, but these marks combined with other minor surface rash and light marks mean the first side looks around VG-. Side 2 is better with a crescent shaped mark the main blemish. Other bits of minor scuffing means this looks a VG, maybe +.
Overall, I don’t think I’m overgrading at VG-, but remember that it plays much better than that.
The Sleeve
The sleeve remains nice and flat without rippling but shows obvious signs of age. There is extensive rubbing to the front, inside gatefold and, less so, on the George Underwood-illustrated rear.
The spine is frayed, chipped and worn but is not yet split. All text has disappeared. Top edge shows wear from rubbing, as does the bottom edge where there is a 3-inch split. Feathering to the opening edges and bumped, rounded corners. Some dirt spots on the front but surprisingly NO creasing at all anywhere on the sleeve.
Inner lyric gatefold is till solid, flat and uncreased but with all round rubbing (not obscuring the text here) Psychedelic back cover shows minor ringwear and the occasional dirt speckle, but colours are still good here.
NO rips, creasing, tears or writing means that, in spite of the noticeable rubbing and wear, the sleeve is graded a realistic G (Good).
Labels show moderate spider traces, not much spindle wear, no writing, sticker marks, tears or damage (see photos)
