IT APPEARED ON THE UK DECCA BUDGET COMPILATION ("THE WORLD OF DAVID BOWIE") AND, SECONDLY, TO OUR BEST KNOWLEDGE, THE MONO MIX OF THE B-SIDE HAS NEVER BEEN MADE AVAILABLE IN ANY WAY, MANNER OR FORM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. IF THIS WERE A COUNTERFEIT BY MR. MENKING, HE WOULD HAVE TO HAVE HAD THE ACCESS TO DERAM/DECCA'S VAULT OF UNRELEASED RECORDINGS OR UNRELEASED MONO MIXES, WHICH WE FIND EXCEEDINGLY UNLIKELY AND BORDERING ON IMPOSSIBLE.

RUBBER BAND:

"Rubber Band" is a song by David Bowie  It was recorded in October 1966 following Bowie's dismissal from Pye Records and helped secure him a record contract with Decca-subsidiary Deram Records, who released it as a single in the United Kingdom on 2 December of the same year. A departure from the mod-style sound of his previous releases, "Rubber Band" displays a style informed by vaudeville and British music hall – influenced particularly by British actor Anthony Newley. The lyrics tell the story of a man who goes off to war and, upon his return, finds his lover fell for a brass band conductor.

Like his other early singles, "Rubber Band" failed to chart. Nevertheless, Bowie's biographers note that the track represents a creative leap in the artist's songwriting. The song was re-recorded in February 1967 for Bowie's first full-length album, David Bowie (1967). Produced by Mike Vernon, the remake has a slower tempo and a varied vocal performance from Bowie. London Records issued the remake as a single in the United States on 27 May 1967. Both versions have since appeared on various compilation albums.

IN THE HEAT OF THE MORNING:

David Bowie recorded ‘In The Heat Of The Morning’ in 1968, again in 2000 for the unreleased Toy album, and also on two occasions for BBC radio.

According to his then-manager Ken Pitt, Bowie apparently considered it a throwaway, written at a time when he was frustrated by his lack of chart success.

The first studio version was recorded at Decca in London on 12 March 1968, with Tony Visconti producing. It was completed with overdubs and changes on 29 March, and 10 and 18 April, which were Bowie’s final sessions for the label.

Bowie and Visconti worked on ‘London Bye Ta-Ta’, intended as the b-side of ‘In The Heat Of The Morning’, during the same sessions.

Decca had already rejected ‘When I Live My Dream’ for single release, and also turned down ‘In The Heat Of The Morning’. This disappointment marked the end of his involvement with the label.

‘In The Heat Of The Morning’ remained unreleased until 6 March 1970, when Pitt selected the stereo mix for inclusion on the Decca compilation The World Of David Bowie. It was also released on the triple-CD version of the 2014 compilation Nothing Has Changed.

A new, slower, version of the song was recorded in 2000 for the aborted Toy album, again produced by Tony Visconti.

A 1968 home demo of ‘In The Heat Of The Morning’ was released on the 2019 box set Spying Through A Keyhole, and later that year on Conversation Piece. The latter also included the Decca Mono Mix, a Decca Alternative Version, and the 1968 BBC recording.

A NOTE ON AUDIODISC LABEL:

Audiodisc is a brand of lacquer disc (sometime known as acetate or instantaneous disc) that was introduced to the US market in 1938 by Audio Devices, Inc. They were made under license from the Pyral company in France that had invented the nitrocellulose lacquer-coated disc in 1934 and that also licensed the process to EMI for their Emidisc brand in the UK.

Audiodiscs were mostly used for home recordings but were sometimes used by recording studios to give to clients to hear at home what they had recorded in the studio. As they were mostly used on simpler home recording devices, they had an extra (sometimes three extra) drive pin holes to prevent slippage – commercial disc cutting machines such as those used to create master discs would have used a vacuum to hold the disc in place. Like professional lacquer discs, the core of an Audiodisc is made of aluminium, making the disc much heavier than a standard shellac or vinyl disc.

Audiodiscs are likely to have handwritten information on the label, and can be difficult to date although various designs of label have been used over the years that may help with dating. They were available in different sizes, including 7, 10 and 12-inches in diameter. The lacquer coating wears much quicker than standard shellac or vinyl records, and a chipped stylus can damage the disc in one play.

Audio Devices, Inc. was sold to Capital Records in 1972 who sold it off in the late 1980s at which point it became the Apollo Masters Corporation. Apollo are still producing lacquer discs under the Audiodisc brand as of 2019.

IMPORTANT NOTE: While this acetate is in a decent state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability. This disc appears to have been unplayed recently and the grooves are still well-formed and fully visible.

This acetate is in about VG- condition  , with some minor and superficial scuffs on the surface. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is  missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised.  .  The disc plays with minimal surface noise and absolutely NO distortion whatsoever

ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 (where 10 is the best), WE GRADE RECORD AS 5

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ACETATE APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER;  ACETATES AND REFERENCE PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS.  This acetate will be shipped in its original, yellow 'Audio Disc' stock acetate sleeve  (please see  the attached images)
