THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE AND ORIGINAL PRESSING OF...
DAVID BOWIE "THE RISE & FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST & THE SPIDERS FROM MARS" VINYL LP RCA VICTOR (SF 8287) [STEREO] COUNTRY: UK RECORD: M- (Closer to M) JACKET: M- RELEASED: 06 JUN 1972

DAVID BOWIE: "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" UK LP.  THE VERY FIRST PRESSING ON THE ORANGE RCA LABEL, RELEASED 6th JUNE, 1972.    SEMI-GLOSSY, TEXTURED ORANGE RCA VICTOR LABEL: SF 8287 (LSP 4702) MAITRIX: BGBS 0864 - 1E /  BGBS 0865 - 2E  The end digit rises that began from '-1E / -1E' have only risen a single digit on Side 2, amazingly low for a big selling album pressed by Pye for RCA.  Quite how early this was can be seen by the music publishing credits on the labels, the inner sleeve and the cover . all three items credit the music publishing to  "Titanic / Chrysalis Limited."     Slightly later in 1972 and still very much part of the huge volume made for such a huge selling album, the music publishing was  partially changed with "MainMan" replacing "T itanic", but still retaining "Chrysalis", unlike above, it was changed to  "MainMan / Chrysalis Limited".   EARLIEST, UNIQUELY SHAPED FIRST ISSUE "Ziggy Stardust" PICTURES AND LYRIC INNER SLEEVE, UNUSED AND  UNSPLIT ,WITH ONLYMINIMAL NATURAL AGEING TO THE MATT ABSORBANT PAPER.  NO SCUFFS OR SCRAPES, JUST THE INEVIT ABLE GENTLE RECORD IMPRESSION AND A FEW RELATED PAPER RIPPLES.   THE L YRIC INNER SLEEVE IS IN UNUSED, NEAR MINT CONDITION.
The top opening has a record access crescent shape cut away in the centre on one side, with an opposite higher crescent shape on the reverseside.  The second printing omitted the double crescent shapes and it had a straight cut top opening, that also had the  original, pre-'Mainman' music copyright's and must be considered a valid first issue.  In my experience the crescent shaped top opening are rarer and most first issues have the straight cut top opening, I took a close up picture that included the earliest   1972 "MainMan / Chrysalis Limited" credit on the right of the recessed record access crescent shape.  I doubt very much if that  has documented until now , the 1971 Copyright to songs and permission to reproduce the lyrics in 1972, is yet again printed as  "Titanic Music Limited / Chrysalis Limited."   "Robert Stace" FIRST ISSUE COVER  WITHOUT A "MainMan" LOGO ON THE BACK, ONLY "A Gem Production."     All the original UK  covers were made from very thin cardboard and unlaminated, they wore very poorly and even as an unplayed record in an unused cover , I still expect to find the usual pronounced creases, ageing, colour fading and  general storage wear  after all those intervening years.  While being brutally honest about the cover's vulnerability to excessive wear , a matt white background to the spine and the sheer scale of the album's black lettering for the rather long LP title, has left the majority of all originals covers with a badly yellowed and stained background with most of the lettering worn away by the end of the first year.
This is an outstanding condition cover due to not being used and stored in a plastic outer sleeve, but I always discuss the whole picture and never just concentrate on exception's to general rules.   The spine is still the original near pure white of 1972, all  the lettering is 100% present, jet black and unworn, just like nearly every cover ever made, it was folded and glued at a slight angle, the title's lettering follows the angle. There are a few ripples relating to the heavyweight record's internal postion, but as my pictures show , this is in fantastic condition, in fact a record impression and the merest brushing from standing are all to any negative comments. Please let me know if you require additional photos, and I'll be happy to accommodate you!
