THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD......
Have you ever heard a cooler album title ?????
I know i have`nt.
To me this is the best album cover ever put out by anybody for just too many reasons .The dress or drag cover is steaped in David Bowie history and it is , in itself , a work of art.
I got my first copy ageds 15 , and i used to feel and stare at it like some mezmerized tit in a trance , my girlfreind thought i was nuts. Maybe i was , shes still here and so is my dress cover .I still stare at it like the same old entransed tit , and now the kids think im nuts ,maybe i am .
If you love Bowie , i mean LOVE BOWIE get this album and go nuts , its great !
The album to me is very underestimated even by Bowie freaks . Too many miss out on stuff like Width of a circle, all the madmen or indeed The Man Who Sold The World, saviour machine , the Supermen and to this day still Bowies most haunting song the SUPERB After All. This LP never stops killing me.
The cover is as atmospheric as the music , making it the whole complete package.
Bowie reclining on the very chaise long he sat on as he watched his new young RAZOR sharp manager Tony De Fries cut into his freind and manager of 3 years the elderly Kennith Pitt telling him hes sacked . Bowie never said a word in the entire meeting (heartless bastard).
On the back cover they spelled drummer Mick Woodmansey`s name wrong , they spell it Woodmansley ! And check the record labels They even got the Producer (and bassist) Tony Visconti`s name wrong they spell it `Tonny`. I asked Mr Visconti about this last year and he said `one can now laff at such things` .
Well Toni i know you didnt laff then cos you put a complaint in and i also have the second pressing on mercury and they corrected your name but not Micks Woodmansey`s .
Then theres the feel of the textured sleeve , it feels strange , i swear theres nothing like this album . David if your watching this , why the king of diamonds?
Those mistakes are one reason David wanted to quit the Mercury label , he thought it was tacky .But to me the errors add to the history of the thing and they are interesting and all part of it . Like the Beatles LP that spelled Mccartney wrong worth £3000 , one day this may go the same way????).
THIS IS A GENUINE ORIGINAL AND HERE IS YOUR PROOF!!!!
Due to the rarety and value this item has been faked twice , onece in Japan in 1978 and again in Italy in the 80s the jap forgery is by far the most superior of the two so i will deal with that one only .
I have seen many sell on eBay as originals so be on your toes...
1) The counterfeit has a sheeny texture to it , the original has a matt texture which is more defined, the colours on the counterfeit are much paler like the EMI/Rycodisc release who used the counterfeit for the artwook .
2)Bowies foot on the counterfeit goes right to the end of the LP sleeve , on the original theres a centimetre or so more sleeve, this is the usual way of telling the two appart.
3)The counterfeit`s back cover is very pale again the original is a more defined grey.
4)The spine has Mercury, title, and matrix number running from right to left on the fake whereas the original has them running left to right , this is when you hold the cover face up.
5)The inner of the sleeve is white on the forgery and grey on the original , and im talking about the actual sleeve and not the paper inner sleeve!
6)The label on the fake is a lighter black than the original , also the typeset on the counterfeit is taller and thinner , it also has an `R` circled rather than the propper `P` , other than that the forgery is bloody good.
It costs about £5000 to fake a record so beware the forgers made plenty of them .
The sleeve has some ringwear but no rips or seam plits and the record has some hairlines but plays great!
