Label/Format: Atlantic – Original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in superb condition, fresh and highly attractive with only a very few light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Hardly any at all on side two in fact. Any marks or handling traces equally few and faint, this is a superb record.

Cat Number: 2401005.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A very good weight for this record. I once had a Plum copy of this one that weight a mere 101 grams.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce especially in very lightly played condition. This was a very late ‘plum’ issue with the label design and catalogue number changing within the same year. Prime condition examples on this original label are at a premium and this record is truly exceptional. A fragile and delicate album, a top pressing and lightly used example is mandatory to withstand playing on high quality modern equipment – not worries with this one. The cover is equally delicate and again, this in superb condition as I hope my pictures show. Do underestimate the rarity of this album when found so clean, I regard this as one of the true masterpieces to adorn the Atlantic ‘Plum’ label.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the greatest albums ever and possibly one of the last ‘Plum’ Atlantics before the transition to Kinney. Peaking at 12 in both the US and UK album charts this Dave Crosby classic was justifiably popular and remains his finest ever moment as a ‘solo’ artist. Not that solo is really the correct term here because he is joined by the cream of San Francisco artists of this era. In no particular order; Crosby performs with all the following: Graham Nash; Neil Young; Phil Lesh; Bill Kreutzmann; Jorma Kaukonen; Grace Slick; Gregg Rolie; Joni Mitchell; Mickey Hart; David Frieberg; Henry Diltz; Paul Kantner; Michael Shrieve; Gary Burden; Stephen Barncard; Robert Hammer; David Geffen; Ethan Crosby; Laura Allen; Jerry Garcia; Jack Cassady, Ronald Stone and Elliot Roberts – as you would expect the backing and performances are nothing less than immaculate, a blend of musical brilliance seldom bettered on an album of this type. Vocally, Crosby was inspired and never sounded much better than here, spiritual, powerful and convincing, a man at the peak of his powers. The backing musicians are allowed space to perform and this is an unselfish record. This is a beautiful copy too and another classic from the one-owner-from-new collection recently purchased. Never subjected to any misuse or abuse on old unworthy record players, he had a stereo system from the early days and played most of his records sparingly. Some very light surface marks seen critically under light, but no sound, that is the really important factor. The cover too is exceptional with minimal traces of wear and with fantastic artwork. So often seen blighted by ringwear and rubbing, again no laminate was used on this one and the card is fairly soft. It even includes it’s original Polydor-style date-coded inner sleeve, the date being 0371 (March 1971) which proves the vintage of this beautifully preserved copy – it reitterates it’s one of the earliest ever made.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): I cannot grade this fragile cover less, it really looks lovely and arguably, it’s undergraded as such. A gatefold format and unlaminated with a very flat matt, smooth finish. The card is quite soft and fragile and is seldom seen with so little wear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Cover Front: This front looks exceptional and rarely will be seen so clean and fresh. A very delicate cover all round, this beautiful ‘sunset’ cover has barely anything to fault with no grubbiness, rubbing, creasing, sticker marks or ringwear. A couple of very faint surface marks near the bottom (but look extra hard). A little mild waviness near the bottom right corner is the main reason for declining a Mint(-) grading, but this shows little. The lack of real wear to the astonishingly beautiful artwork speaks for itself.

Cover Back: Probably even better: a couple of tiny surface chips (again look very hard) but little else to fault. Crosby’s forehead may appear to have a rub mark – not the case – it’s a highlight on the graphic which is entirely correct. No rubbing or ringwear and clean and fresh as when made. A very mild and faint surface crease trace near the top right corner hardly shows.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Nigh-on pristine, with pictures of all the players on view. They rarely get seen better than this.

Top Edges: Any rub traces are tiny and faint, not quite dead straight but pretty close.

Bottom Edges: Very faint and light patchy rubbing only, and these are almost dead straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge. With end-on viewing the very slight and mild wave is just apparent on the front. It will hardly be significant enough to worry most collectors, but be ware nonetheless.

Spine and Text: Quite a delicate spine that has survived the years well overall. Solid, reasonably straight, with a little mild compression and folded very square All edges meet up closely together and parallel. The fragile text and graphic all present and intact with any rub traces or character clipping tiny and faint.

Corners: Light and small tip rubs are near impossible to avoid completely. This has just that or less and all retain very fine to excellent shape (at least).

Cover Summary: When seen close to it’s best, a glorious cover, laminate would have made it an exceptional one, but alas, not to be. So this fresh looking example with so little wear will give near maximum pleasure. Most collectors will enjoy it I feel sure.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this copy includes it’s original Polydor style lined inner which as only modest ageing due to the usual darkening of the adhesive on the seams. This has two immaculate, crisp and undamaged window circles and very clear lining that has only very mild crinkle traces. Few creases and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Importantly, this is date-coded 13 0371 (April 1971), proving it to be one of the earliest pressings ever made in the UK (please see this detail in close-up).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual example that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks or blemishes are mostly very light, fine and faint and have no sound at all, these seen with scrutiny under bright light. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Atlantic record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Clear, precise, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, beautifully produced by the man himself. Any surface sounds are minimal to none and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album that has many quiet and delicate passages. Absolute silence is a near impossible ask especially if playing on ultra revealing equipment – the LP12 takes no prisoners and reveals all the beauty of any vinyl record (as well as the bad). Nothing ‘bad’ on this copy at all and this offers hugely enjoyable and clean audio quality. Few copies will match or outperform this one significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been well stored within a non-smoking environment. A beautiful recording and a gateway into the recording studio itself, nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy does it almost maximum justice and merits high recommendation.

End Piece: Recognized by critics and fans as one of the genuine all-time greats, this was Crosby’s debut ‘solo’ album, and a very busy time for the man after first producing Joni Mitchell’s debut and teaming up with Stills, Nash and Young for other albums. This record is an extraordinary work by any standards and essentially a mood piece with Crosby using vocal and guitar chords to stunning effect, the final song even has an eerie Gregorian chant feel, an amazing finale to a sublime release. This album is a real treasure and I am delighted to offer such a fine all-round copy. Remember the Kinney orange and green labelled copies were only just around the corner when this album was issued making the ‘Plums’ more scarce and somewhat elusive. Especially so in such fine condition. A host of stars make this record very special – as well as being a late Plum album, it should appeal to scarce vinyl collectors anyway. For those who originally thought Dave Crosby is not really for them, think again, give this one a try, you WILL discover a man inspired, this is as uplifting as music gets. The music unreservedly recommended to all.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
