Description
1991 United Dairies LP release of Steven Stapleton and David Tibet's gorgeous, hypnotic The Sadness of Things. The title composition, which runs for over half an hour on the first side of vinyl (a real quality pressing), may well be the greatest thing this pair ever did, together or separately; certainly it's one of Stapleton's most beautiful and nuanced constructions, as haunting as any section of Soliloquy for Lilith, or Salt Marie Celeste. Tibet is unusually calm and direct here, and the whole breathes deeply of the sublime without swallowing any of the ridiculous. The second side (which doesn't feature Tibet) has Stapleton and Geoff Cox's thematically-compatible The Grave and Beautiful Name of Sadness, which would, years later, contribute hugely to the atmosphere of Peter Strickland's multi-award-winning film Katalin Varga.
This album, and its CD counterpart (from which I would not wish to be parted), has never been reissued, nor has either track been collected in this full-length form on any subsequent Nurse With Wound or Current 93 release (there's about a minute of the A side on C93's Emblems). The vinyl's in excellent condition. The sleeve has a small seam split and some minor edgewear at the top. Free postage in the UK.
