Original ... 1969 ...BEAUTIFUL "TOP COPY" ... essentially the second SERPENT POWER LP ... much harder to find and contains rewarding melodies & moods in the same vein as the Serpent Power LP ...Tina and David Meltzer were the mainstays behind the short-lived, but quite talented Serpent Power. Produced by Sam Charters, "Poet Song" offered up an odd mixture of spoken word poems and artsy folk-rock material. David wrote all 15 selections (both the poems and songs), and was also credited with lead guitar and handling about half of the vocals.
Tina clearly had the better voice, so it shouldn't come as a major surprise to discover she was responsible for most of the highlights. Those included the martial 'I'm So Willing' (kind of a proto-feminist ballad, 'Hymn To Love' and 'Pure White Place' (the latter sounding like an early Jefferson Airplane outtake). The similarities from both Country Joe & the Fish and the Jefferson Airplane are toned way down from the Serpent Power album, yet still overall serves up as a counterpart to their famously collected first Lp. Tina Meltzer takes the lead vocals more often than David Meltzer on the purely musical selections, her rich and clear tones and phrasing suitable for the contemplative, wistful mood of the songs. The mood is nicely varied by the darkly theatrical "I'm a Lover" (on which David Meltzer takes lead), the Latin rhythms and exuberant flute of "It Is for You," and the classical arrangements of "I'll Forget You."
