By 1959, Miles Davis had already worked his way through bebop's density and arrived at a point where the music feels pared down to its barest framework. Chord sequences recede into the background and leave the players exposed with each decision audible as it happens. Recorded largely in first takes, it carries that slight precariousness, and you can feel the sense of musicians committing in the moment with no safety net. 'So What' opens with a figure that barely declares itself, Davis entering with lines that hang just behind the beat, withholding resolution. 'Blue In Green' tightens into a close exchange, piano and horn circling in a narrow space. By 'Flamenco Sketches', the form loosens almost entirely, each player moving through it independently, but the piece held together by feel alone.
