Description
On offer is 1971 LP by DAY OF PHOENIX called WIDE OPEN N-WAY on GREENWICH GRAMOPHONE COMPANY, catalogue no. GSLP-R 1002.
Recorded in 1970, and released in the UK in 1971 on the short-lived Greenwich Gramophone label, Wide Open N-Way stands as the unquestionable high point of Danish psychedelia. The music on side one has a dreamlike charm, characterised by deft guitar interplay from Karsetn Lyng and Ole Prehn (shades of Quicksilver Messenger Service) and the majestic vocalising of Hans Lauridsen (very clean diction on the all-English lyrics). Side two gets a whole lot heavier, dominated by the sprawling mindf**k of ’Mind Funeral’. It says much for the freshness of the band’s vision that the freakiest instrument on this freakiest of songs is the piano, played by Erik Stredt (occupied with bass on the other tracks). Wide Open N-Way’s classic status was acknowledged by a 2012 CD reissue on Cherry Red, but this is the original, rare-as-hen’s-teeth vinyl album.
The stereo record grades as excellent minus, with minor wear and a few marks that don’t sound, bar half a dozen consecutive clicks on ‘Mind Funeral’ (drowned out), and a few opening and closing pops on Side 1, with low-level surface noise during a quiet bit on ‘Wide Open N-Way’ itself. The gatefold cover is in excellent minus condition with minor wear (notably, a scuff on the spine, see photo). The labels are clean and free of writing or spindlewear. It comes in the original blue-rimmed ‘STEREO’ poly-lined inner sleeve.
