Label/Format: A Square Record (a tiny obscure label distributed by EMI) and rarely ever seen (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with less than moderate spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Being white labels, these show little.

Cat Number: SQA 101.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A 155 gram heavyweight. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity & Info: Very Rare: the books again hardly tell the true story. With only 1000 ever pressed (or maybe even less), how many actually still exist? A tiny and obscure small label that is rarely seen. Although distributed by EMI, pressing quality is known to be ‘variable’ and this one does have some distortion on two songs on side two. Sporadic and intermittent, but overall brief but noticeable. Certainly a mini ‘lost’ progressive gem that many collectors will not even have heard of. Only bought to my attention because a close neighbour bought this because he played bass with members of this band prior to release and he simply wanted it for nostalgia. Allegedly this is now available on CD but sound quality is apparently pretty poor being transferred from crackly vinyl - again emphasising top pressings are incredibly rare. That’s a shame because this is a very good record. Dear Mr Time were an Essex-based band, thus the local knowledge via the one-and-only original owner. With so much mediocrity or less bands getting full quality CD release, this one deserves the same. Comparisons in sound?, well clearly they were influenced by The Moody Blues and even elements of King Crimson and even Spring. The wonderful Mellotron is used but is uncredited on the sleeve notes. A conceptual album that blends electric and acoustic with skillful use of wind instruments. The theme is birth to old age and it owes ideas to The Pretty Things masterpiece ‘SF Sorrow’, but musically, it’s different. As one gets older, it’s harder to unearth genuine ‘lost’ treasures that have not been heard before, but this truly was a new one for me anyway, shameful maybe as they were almost a ‘local’ band. As stated, there are sound issues on side two, just two songs are really affected with distortion, clearly and absolutely no doubt, within the pressing (or cutting) of the record. Ultra tiny shiny ‘glints’ can be seen with utmost scrutiny under light. Tell-tale signs I have seen on other records on occasion, and always they sound but tracking is unaffected. Small label, variable quality, it’s hardly unusual is it? If this is an issue, do not bid. Certainly a lovely prog gem with quality songs and musicianship, one for the collector who thinks he most everything the genre has to offer, maybe?

Cover Grade and Format: EX++, a single cover with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges but only on to the back via the spine. Printed and made in England by West Brothers.

Lamination & Front: Not a lot to fault on this one: a couple of creases near the right edge and that’s about it. This remains fresh, clear and shiny, any mild traces of dulling are more manufacture issues. All fully adhered with no lifting or blisters, this front will prove very hard to find better.

Cover Back: The unprotected back is in superb condition with few marks and barely any wear at all. It shows a rare picture of the band along with war veterans. A few light surface blemishes under light but no ringwear or creases, really, really nice.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: Unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering and guarteed, untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate but is centred slightly high.

Corners: Small, light rub top left, little else and all retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this ultra rare early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner: The plain white, unlined inner is included in near mint condition, this almost looks new.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX (this is for looks), A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with just a small few light and faint surface marks that have no sound. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This has to be one of the rarest records I have offered that can be pigeon-holed under ‘progressive’. Issued in numbers not exceeding 1000, and likely even less, few will even exist let alone surface for offering. Under-valued and little-known and issued on a tiny label. Sound?, well side one plays to near perfection with no issues even worthy of mention. Side however has some sporadic distortion on a couple of tracks. As stated this has nothing to do with wear or mistreatment, it lies within the pressing. The tell-tale fine glints on the odd single groove always sound. Going back years, I clearly remember buying records on the odd occasion that had them. These too being on major labels, I always knew they would sound and these cannot be masked and this is the case here. But most of the record plays superbly. It may be case of put up with a few brief sound blemishes or go without, any doubts do not bid, but I feel very confident few will play perfectly all the way through. This being my one and only sighting and audition of this album, I cannot say with hands-on experience. Similar pressing issues are included on my mono copy of ‘Music in a Doll’s House’ by Family, also on offer – this was issued on the substantially bigger Reprise label, so it happens and in that album’s case, it’s well documented and known. Overall, this is an enjoyable set and prog fans will be surprised how little attention this one has had over time. With more promotion this band could have been much bigger and successful, but like so many, they disappeared and this is a genuine ‘lost’ mini-gem. Musically, recommended highly; sound-quality?, well not perfect on side two, but still, with caution yes. But for the more discerning or audiophile listener, be aware this does have a few unwanted sounds. A genuine (slightly flawed) obscure rarity for the serious collector, but any doubts…

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
