Description
This is a very nice copy of Debut LP-8, "The New Oscar Pettiford Sextet." This 10" LP, released in 1954, was Oscar's first appearance on LP. The personnel include Julius Watkins on french horn, Phil Urso on tenor, Walter Bishop on piano, and Percy Brice on drums. Oscar plays cello, leaving Charles Mingus to push things along on bass. There is some spirited playing, and the tunes are carefully arranged to showcase the unusual instrumentation. The tunes are "The Pendulum at Falcon's Lair", "Tamalpais" (Oscar plays bass on this number), "Jack the Fieldstalker", "Low and Behold" (nice interchange between Oscar and Mingus) and "Stockholm Sweetning." All the tunes were written by Oscar except the last. Jacket is graded VG+: the paper has flaked away from the middle section of the spine and there is some general rubbing along the edges, but there are no seam splits at top and bottom. The back cover has picked up a little soil but is still mostly white. Front cover looks great with a striking photo. The record looks VG+ but plays NM with no scratches. There's a mild amount of surface noise from the pressing, but the music covers it up effectively. Very cool disc.
