DVORAK : SYMPHONY No.5 'New World'
DECCA SXL 2289 WBG ED1 Original Recording By
Good looking copy of this stunning recording. Overall the vinyl is visually in EX+ condition but there is a 2mm mark on Side 1 (see pic below) and one barely visible sleeve mark on side two so overall I will grade as EX-.
Having played the album a number of times, I will grade side one as VG-. 90% of the side plays EX+ but there is some occasional clicking and crackle right at the beginning of the side and towards the very end. The mark pictured below is the one flaw which lets the side down . Even though it is very small, it creates 10-12 substantial clicks in very quick succession. I have found that these vary in intensity depending on the stylus. I played the album on a Goldring Lenco GL75 turntable using two different Shure N75ED Type 2 styli. The first which was brand new created loud clicks (G+) whilst my older one was not nearly as intense and would probably grade VG+. Hence why overall I have chosen VG-.
Side two has some very occasional light background noise and if I remember correctly one small click. Overall I would grade as EX- with 95% of the side playing EX+.
The sleeve is in nice condition but has some wear and tear to the bottom and top edges including some loss of laminate (see pics). I would grade as VG-. It doesn't suffer from excessive discoloration which is common for this release and there is very little ring wear.
Happy bidding!
Please note I use UK Record Collector grading system for all albums with the addition of the accepted Near Mint category:
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.
The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.
NEAR MINT: The record appears new but is known to have been played because the label has light spindle marks or because it has come from a previous owner
and is assumed to have been played by them
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.
The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality,
despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.
The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.
POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc.
The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
I try to be as accurate as possible, however, we are all human so if there are any problems please let me know.
