I have just acquired a collection of Classical LPs, some of which are on the interesting labels (DECCA, RCA, HMV, COLUMBIA, DG etc.), most in Near Mint or, Excellent+ condition.
Here we have "MOZART : CONCERTO No.27 In B FLAT MAJOR FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA & SONATA No.11 IN A MAJOR FOR PIANO (K.331)" with Piano played by WILHELM BACKHAUS & KARL BOHM conducting THE VIENNA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (for the Concerto).
This is on the original Black DECCA label with Silver print. It is a WIDEBAND label with a GROOVE running around it about 1.5cm from the edge & with the words "ORIGINAL RECORDING BY THE DECCA RECORD Co. LTD. LONDON" printed around the top half. It has a wide band, DECCA logo & ffss circular badge. This is an original 1960 recording. Cat.no. SXL 2214 . I've played both sides of this record from start to finish; WOW what a truly great musical experience. I love Mozart & it certainly doesn't come any better than this; really moving stuff (I just might start collecting classical if recordings are of this exceptional sonic quality).
The vinyl is in stunning condition especially when you consider it is 48 years old !
Visually; Side 1 is Excellent with just one small mark letting it down; however, this particular small surface scratch makes no sound. Soundwise, there is just one, one second tick about a minute into the solo piano after the Orchestral introduction. Annoying though this is on an otherwise near perfect side of vinyl it literally lasts for a second; on close inspection (under bright light) it would appear to be an in-line short, straight scratch within the one groove. In other words, it goes with the groove rather than across it; impossible to remove I'm afraid. Otherwise a whole side of near to perfection in sound.
Side 2 looks Near Mint apart from a couple of visible paper-withdrawal marks which make no noise whatsoever. Sound is perfect to my ear. The record plays really well throughout, however, my hyper-critical Linn Sondek LP12 system does reveal the odd crackle between tracks & during the quieter passages which I put down to static.
The labels are almost pristine with only the slightest evidence of spindle marks. The inner custom DECCA ffss sleeve is intact &, apart from a touch of age "dulling" & creasing (go on, it is half a century old ! ), perfect.
The cover is near-perfect on the front, laminated side with no marks & just a couple of very minor creases near to the spine side. The Spine is about as perfect as it could be. The Title print is ALL perfect, as it is printed flat on the back. The back, unlaminated, cover is amazing considering it's great age; clear, bright & mostly, unmarked. There is some blackening in the form of ringwear showing where the disc has worn an impression on the surface; no writing or other unwanted marks. In addition the Flipbacks with semi-cicular cutaways (top & bottom) show just one small tear/bit missing from the bottom lefthand corner (half an inch). Otherwise pretty near perfect. This "Flipbacks with semi-circular cutaways" rear cover is proof of a very early DECCA pressing.
These recordings are highly sought after & very scarce. The "RARE CLASSICAL RECORD PRICE GUIDE" rates this as a £225 package; although not MINT, this is an Excellent copy &, I would think it would be very difficult to find a better one for sale.
I know I've majored on one particular tiny scratch & probably done myself no favours, but as a passionate collector of high quality vinyl myself, I know how poorly some people describe (over praising) their records. I'd much rather be totally upfront with my descriptions so that you will know exactly what you are buying. I'm treating you as I would hope to be treated by fellow sellers when I'm in the buying seat. I hope I am an extremely honest seller.
I use high quality packaging with plenty of padding/stiffner material so that the record gets to you in as good a state as is possible.
