Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle traces barely even registering. Along with two superbly clean playing surfaces, there is scant evidence of this record ever being played.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. About average for it’s era.

Rarity: Fairly scarce and this is still an early pressed copy dating from around 1971.

Brief Info: The early Deep Purple had a very different sound and partially different line-up to the more familiar heavier sound they became famous for starting with ‘In Rock’ and subsequent albums. Here cover versions were mixed with their own material and had a more progressive sound with hints of psychedelia. A band still finding their market and not selling in the numbers of their Ian Gillan era. This album, their first for Harvest is a lovely barely played copy. It includes the promotional lined inner as well, first editions would not have done as these promote albums later than this release. So not a very first as the EMI logo is included on the label, but the inclusion of the Gramophone text on the rims does prove it’s still an early example – and barely played too

Cover Grade and Format: Grading this beauty much less than Mint(-) would not be doing it full justice, I will say undergraded at EX++. This being one of the cleanest and freshest examples I have seen for ages. A gatefold format with front and back laminate. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day.

Lamination: Front & Back: Both sides are in stunning condition with little to fault. The laminate still ultra clear, fresh and shiny with hardly any marks and all practically fully adhered with no lifting or blisters of any major note – one tiny one on the back near the top left corner which shows little. The lack of friction rubs or dulling and even creasing makes this a visual delight and with the artwork looking pure white with no yellowing makes for an exceptional example. The only creasing are a few edge hairline types, the most apparent on the same aforementioned corner.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside faces look little short of as made.

Top Edges: Both unworn with full laminate.

Bottom Edges: Little wear, mild rub traces only. Possible laminate peeling on the edges, if so, very neat and with minimal visual impact.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and near parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that just has a natural central ridge formed by opening.

Corners: Minimal traces of wear, a couple of small and light tip creases only. All retain very fine shape to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic Harvest cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: For good measure, this Harvest lined promotional inner is in the same superb condition as the rest of the set and has to be one of the cleanest, freshest examples I have seen for some time. As pure white as new with barely a blemish to be seen. This inner even promotes the same album and would not have been included in the very first pressing. Remarkably preserved with none of the usual glue seam edge darkening and almost crease free. I happily grade this incredible inner Mint(-).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), a superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with two lovely fresh looking playing surfaces, any visual blemishes are ultra few and faint. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely Harvest record mostly plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault bar very slight surface trace sound at the very beginning. Fading very quickly to nothing and then practically perfect sound for the rest of the duration. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No pops or clicks were noted and overall, this is an exceptional clean pressing, the minor surface trace blemish at the beginning a slight mystery as nothing could be seen from these eyes even under a bright 100W lamp. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
