Description

Deep Purple : The Book Of Taliesyn A - 1G / B - 1G
This very early pressing plays to an excellent standard and S1 in particular plays with superb clarity and depth.  Their version of 'We Can Work It Out' is stunning!  S2 does have some 'background' here and there but the actual sound quality is still very impressive.
This pressing has many of the same characteristics as the first pressing - the 1G matrix and no EMI logo on the labels and 'The Gramophone Co. Ltd...' around the perimeter and 'Made In Great Britain' at the foot of the labels.  My research tells me that this is a second pressing.
The gatefold is quite simply one of the finest I have seen with barely any wear and the original inner just has some of the usual creasing but no side splits.
SHVL 751 // A - 1G / B - 1G // GL 2 / RG 1
The audio on S1 is Ex+ (Near Mint for the majority / T3 Near Mint- / 'We Can Work It Out' Near Mint / Mint-)
The audio on S2 ranges between VG+ and Near Mint
The gatefold is Near Mint-
The original inner is Ex-
The labels are Near Mint-
Visual grading
The vinyl is in excellent condition and retains a strong glossy look with no scratches.  S1 is very clean with only a very small number of very faint hairlines, one faint scuff area and a slightly more obvious V shaped hairline mark on the first track.  This sounds like I am listing a lot of negatives but believe me when I say it still has a very impressive visual look!  S2 has a few very faint hairlines as you would expect and a small area of 'specks' also.  There are no scratches on either side and there is not a great deal of spindle wear either.
Play grading
'Listen, Learn, Read On' plays superbly from the opening groove.  The clarity is exceptional and the only 'background' is a small number of very light static sounds.  You would not think this vinyl was over 50 years old!  There are no clicks or pops and the majority is Near Mint but as there as there is the odd light static tick I will grade as Ex+ it really is a very impressive opening track.
'Wring That Neck' has one click literally on the first note and then plays with stunning clarity and power.  There is barely any intrusion on the audio and whilst the playback isn't quite perfect it is not far from it!  This is easily one of the finest renditions of this instrumental that I have ever heard.  There is one very light click further in but it is easily missed and the 'quieter' Blackmore solo has only very minimal 'background'.  What really stands out is the actual sound quality though - the grooves are so clean and this has obviously not been overplayed - the audio definition is just superb.  The crescendo end section is exceptional!  No interference of any kind.  This easily deserves another Ex+ grade.
The intro on 'Kentucky Woman' plays extremely well with just one very light click and barely any static.  It continues to play with great quality and as per the previous tracks the audio is Near Mint for the majority if not better!  Blackmore's solo and then Lord's instrumental section provide a fine examples of the clarity on offer here.  There is no interference and the remainder of this cover is absolutely stunning also!  I cannot overstate how superbly it plays and there is no distortion on the top end either.  Each note plays with such 'clean' precision and Near Mint- is an honest appraisal of the audio.
'Exposition' plays with wonderful clarity from the outset with only a handful of mega light ticks on the intro.  As the tempo increases and the volume builds the audio cannot be faulted, wow what sound!  It plays with incredible power and definition and I heard only a small number of minor ticks and one light click during this instrumental.  I would grade this as Ex+ but again there are so many sections that grade far higher.  Blackmore's intro on 'We Can Work It Out' is 'as new' and from then on it plays to a standard that is STUNNING in every way!  I cannot emphasise enough just how immaculate the audio is here!  The clarity is outstanding and I suspect it has hardly ever been played.  The vocals are so 'high' in the mix of course and yet the definition on every note is sublime and even the quieter moments play with such precision.  With only a handful of barely audible dust ticks this is the definitive version in my opinion and even the fade out is so clear.  For a final track to play with such breathtaking clarity is a rarity and you have to remember this is from 1969!  An outstanding Near Mint version and even that might be underselling it!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------   'Shield' has only minimal static on the intro and plays very clearly.  As the vocal comes in there is still only minimal 'background' and it progresses in the same way.  There is a little crackle for a couple of seconds only but again the clarity of the actual audio is very impressive.  There is no 'muddiness' to the sound at all and again this can only be because it has not been played very much.  The second half of the track in particular plays with stunning quality for the majority.  Just a little static on the final verse and at the end of the percussive section.  It's difficult to just use a 'blanket' grading here and it's fair to say it ranges between Ex and Near Mint but again there are many sections that play better.  No clicks or pops anywhere!
The quiet intro on 'Anthem' has a little more 'background' but this is brief and once the vocal begins the audio is very strong with very little intrusion.  It continues to play very well but there is more static and the odd crackle sound here.  It is certainly not loud but I have to say the audio still plays very clearly.  The long mid instrumental is a case in point - great clarity of sound but with a little more 'background'.  The final section plays superbly with only minimal static right at the end.  I would say this grades between VG+ and Near Mint
'River Deep, Mountain High' has some static and a little crackle on the intro and as it progresses it decreases quite a bit.  Not a perfect intro but the majority plays very clearly indeed.  As the volume builds the playback is stunning with only minimal static in one brief section.  When the vocal comes in you cannot fault the audio - so quiet and yet there is no interference at all and it continues to plays with great clarity and depth.  They give their own 'wall of sound' affect and it has lost none of its original deep powerful quality during the intervening years.  Blackmore's solo is so powerful and has distortion and the remainder is nigh on perfect with no 'background' on the fade out.  Having listened to every second I will again have to give a broad spectrum and grade as ranging from VG+ to Near Mint
In summary this very early pressing was a difficult one to grade as I am sure you can see!  There are so many sections that play with genuine quality but yes there is some 'background' here and there and mainly on S2.  However, I must stress that while it is a little intrusive the actual clarity of sound remains very impressive indeed.  There is no underlying static as such just some intermittent 'background' as stated.  It certainly plays like it has not been on a turntable very much at all and S1 is superb and especially their version of 'We Can Work It Out'.
The Gatefold
The laminated E.J. Day gatefold has only very minimal shelf and remains in great condition.  The edges have no rubbing and the spine is near perfect with barely any wear on the corners.  The other corners are also in fantastic condition and the opening edge has no obvious handling wear either.  The front cover is beautifully clean with no marking or laminate damage and the back cover has also been so well preserved.  Hopefully the photos do it justice!  The inside of the gatefold again is so clean with no marking and barely any fading on the edges.  A fine example, it would be difficult to find better!
The Inner Sleeve
The original poly-lined inner (Patent no and Made In Great Britain' printed on one side) is in excellent condition with no side splits or tears.  It does have some creasing and a little age related fading also but not an excessive amount.
The Labels
The yellow/green Harvest labels (no EMI logo) are very clean and have no marking or writing and not too much spindle wear.  They have lost none of their original colour.
