Description
Original 1969 pressing of Denis & the Times' second single "Whenever You Want Me" b/w "Dennis Dupree from Danville" on the Trend label. While not as highly regarded as their first single "Flight Patterns", this one's got plenty of fuzz guitar and is also very enjoyable. And while the first single's appeared on more compilations than you can shake a drumstick at, both sides of this second single have yet to be comped. "Whenever You Want Me" is great echoey, moody psych rock with heavy church organ, murky rumbling rolling drums and soulful strident vocals with a real gospel inflection (especially when the vocals and church organ hook up). It's very dramatic stuff, and sent up to the heavens when the BLISTERING FUZZ guitar kicks in! The B-side is a cover of the Cryan Shames song, "Dennis Dupree from Danville", rendered in a much heavier West Coast acid rock style. The vocal harmonies recall the Jefferson Airplane or the Mamas and the Papas, except the Mamas and the Papas didn't punctuate their songs with raw bursts of fuzz guitar. There's also some great George Harrison inspired slashing guitar work in the bridge. With two singles and four GREAT songs, it's a mystery why this band isn't better known among psych heads - my guess is the rather bland band name. If these two singles were recorded by a group called the Neander-thaws or the Caramel Bulldozer, you'd be paying three figures for the right to hear 'em. Original 1969 single on the Trend label from Smyrna, Georgia. Vinyl plays VG+. Winning bidder pays $4.00 shipping in the US, $5 to Canada, $6 everywhere else.
