TRUNK RECORDS JBH014LP - UNPLAYED!
Rare vinyl copy of scarce work by the legendary eccentric, Desmond Leslie, on the equally legendary (and eccentric?!) Trunk label!
Desmond Leslie was born in Ireland and brought up at Castle Leslie, Co. Monaghan, as part of a well-established and well-connected
aristocratic family. His father, Sir Shane Leslie, was first cousin to Winston Churchill.
Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, Desmond joined the RAF and spent 1942-45 as a fighter pilot, flying Spitfires and Hurricanes. It was
during this time that he wrote his first novel, 'Careless Lovers', which became a wartime bestseller. During the war he also met his first wife,
Agnes Bernelle. Post 1945 he moved into film production and more writing, and by 1953 had penned his most infamous work, 'The Flying Saucers
Have Landed' which became a keystone in the New Age movement. The book was based on Leslie's beliefs that ancient monuments and artifacts
were obvious proof of sophistication and technology that could never be attributed to people of their time, so were obviously superhuman, or came
from outer space! It was during his investigations into these theories that he corresponded regularly with Adamski, the American self-styled
Ufologist and ice cream vendor! In the book Leslie calculates (using complex binary codes and calendars) that the first space craft had arrived
from Venus in the year 18,617,841 BC. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the book became an international bestseller!
Another of Leslie's interests was music and, from his own small, private studio, he produced a few recordings on a single acetate called
'Music Of The Future' which was intended for himself and his friends. Later, all of his recordings were licensed to Joseph Weinburger,
the London publisher, who issued them on a short series of 78 rpm library discs and were put to occasional use in science and mystery-
based programming, such as the early Dr Who episodes.
In 1963 he shot to instant fame when he leapt from the audience and punched Bernard Levin, live, on 'That Was The Week That Was'.
The critic had given a scathing review of Mrs Leslie's new one-woman show. (She also has the distinction of being the first woman to appear
nude on the London stage!) By the mid-'60s, Desmond had moved back to Ireland and opened a nightclub known as 'Annabel's On The Bog',
which was attended by the likes of Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull. He also published the intergalactic spoof, 'Space Race', with his friend
and astronomer, Patrick Moore.
The recordings on this disc are taken, in their entirety, from a rare Leslie acetate pressed in January 1960. It has never been previously
commercially released. The original masters have been lost, so this recording was mastered from an original acetate.
Sleeve: A great front image of a man in a space suit (Desmond Leslie?)! Rear notes from Jonny Trunk and expansive track details from
the composer. I removed the original shrinkwrap when I received the record, as it was bending the sleeve quite severely. Having stored it for
sometime, the bend has now gone, but there are a few very light surface marks on the front. Nothing which has broken the image surface, though.
Inner Sleeve: Plain white, slightly shaped and glossy. One very minor chip in the die cut on both sides (in the same spot).
Side One: Theme Music from the film: The Sky Fell In - 1. Play In (0:26), 2. Destruction Of The Flies (4:46),
