All-American Vietnam War decriers and sonic activists Devo took their name from the word "devolution", a term pulled from the obscure Reverend BH Shadduck's quirky 1924 anti-evolution thesis Jocko-Homo Heavenbound. That snarling sense of humanity going backwards returns in most profound final form on Nitrous Nightmare, Halloween Live '75: the legendary live performance by the band performed at the WHK Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio, their home state. Though technically fulfilling their duty as a support act for Sun Ra, many said they stole the show, some speculating that they'd binged on booze and nitrous oxide before taking the stage. Though they said they were trapped inside a "negative energy vortex" that day, their ability to convert said energies to ferocious gold is evident, this being the first time 'Jocko Homo' was performed live amid an array of deep cuts, at a time when many of their best hits had been written but not yet released.
