Der italienische Komponist und Dirigent Enrico Mainardi (1897-1976) ist einer der bedeutendsten Cellisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Mainardi wurde In Mailand geboren und studierte dort am Verdi-Konservatorium. Im Alter von 13 Jahren trat er erstmals als Solist vor Publikum auf. Drei Jahre später führte seine Zusammenarbeit mit Max Reger zur Uraufführung dessen Violoncellosonate, Op. 116. Später nahm Enrico Mainardi eine Professur an der Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rom an. Zusammen mit dem Pianisten Edwin Fischer und dem Violinvirtuosen Georg Kulenkampff bildete er ein in ganz Europa bekanntes Trio. Als Kulenkampff verstarb, nahm Wolfgang Schneiderhan seinen Platz ein. „Belcanto auf dem Violoncello“ – das scheint der treffendste Kommentar zu sein, den man nach einem Konzert von Mainardi gehört hatte. Der Klang seines Cellos ist von bemerkenswerter Flexibilität und Wärme, fast wie eine schöne Stimme. Dennoch ist jede einzelne Phrase perfekt geformt. Seine inspirierte Darbietung verleiht jeder Interpretation etwas Magisches.
Analogphonic beauftragte Maarten de Boer mit der Bearbeitung der Universal-Music-Masterbänder. Das audiophile Remastering bei Emil Berliner Studios wird der überragenden musikalischen Qualität der Aufnahme in allen Belangen gerecht und beweist, wie außerordentlich gut stereophone Monoaufnahmen klingen können.
Die LP-Neuauflage von „Enrico Mainardi Spielt…“ wurde bei der Pallas Group GmbH in Deutschland auf hochwertigem 180-Gramm-Vinyl (33 U/min) gepresst.

»Belcanto on a violoncello« - seems to be the most appropriate comment overheard after a concert given by the famous Italian musician. The tone quality produced on his cello is of a remarkable flexibility and warmth, almost like a beautiful voice. Yet, every single phrase is moulded to perfection. His inspired performance imparts magic to each interpretation. Enrico Mainardi was born 1897 in Milano, and studied there at the Verdi Conservatoire. At the age of 13 he appeared before the public as a soloist. Three years later his collaboration with Max Reger led to the first performance of the latter’s violoncello sonata Op. 116. Since then Enrico Mainardi has given solo performances in all European countries. For some years Mainardi has held a professorship at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, and regularly takes part in the annual summer courses at Salzburg and Lucerne. Together with Edwin Fischer and Georg Kulenkampff he formed a trio, well known throughout Europe. When Kuhlenkampff died a few years ago, his place was taken by Wolfgang Schneiderhan. Enrico Mainardi has made a name for himself as a composer and conductor. The first German performance of his cello concerto took place at Bochum in March 1952.
His importance as a soloist and a teacher is indisputable.
