OK, so Diane Renay (born Renee Diane Kushner in Philadelphia on July 13, 1945) was no Connie Francis or Leslie Gore, nor even a Sue Thompson for that matter. But she sure wasn't as bad as a couple of reviewers paint her out to be. In fact, a big part of her problem with a lack of ongoing commercial success can be laid at the feet of the British Invasion which was just getting into high gear when she came along. And once The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals, Peter & Gordon, Manfred Mann, The Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers and a whole host of others became established stars in North America there wasn't much room on the charts for any but the best North America had to offer. Like Bobby Vinton, The 4 Seasons, Beach Boys, Supremes, Shangri-Las, and Mary Wells to name a select few.
She is now firmly part of what would later be categorized as the "Girl Group Sound" - a highly-collectable sub-genre of R&R which would go beyond the "Group" aspect of the title by embracing those solo female vocalists whose material fit the general scope of the type of music associated with the genre. And that fit Diane to a "T. Unfortunately, by the late 1964, after her stint with 20th Century Fox, the music had changed drastically.
Of her two Top 40 hits, her debut Navy Blue reached # 1 Adult Contemporary as well as # 6 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in February/March 1964 on 20th Century Fox 456 b/w Unbelievable Guy, with the follow-up Kiss Me, Sailor reaching # 29 Hot 100 in April on 20th Century Fox 477 b/w Soft-Spoken Guy (all were part of this original LP). And the results weren't too shabby when you consider there she was with her opening hit rubbing elbows with the likes of I Wanna Hold Your Hand, She Loves You, Please, Please Me and Can't Buy Me Love by The Beatles. Dawn (Go Away) by The 4 Seasons and Fun, Fun, Fun by The Beach Boys. But after that she would join a host of others run over by the British double-decker bus. In 1966, United Artists gave her one shot with Please Gypsy/Dynamite (United Artists 50,048) but it too failed.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY GEORGE O'LEARY)
This is one of the rarest Girl/Girl group albums of the British Invasion era of the early 1960's and a classic, beautiful example of the Phil Spector-esque production (no, it wasn't produced by Spector himself –it was produced by Bob Crewe - but it may well have been). This gorgeous STEREO version almost never shows up on the market in this condition; good luck finding another copy like this one. Miss it now, and you'll be navy-blue for a looooong time.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD:
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Stereo pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies by a ratio of at least 10:1.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some writing on its back side (in blue ballpoint pen, about 2.½ square inches)
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)
- Minor shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams (nothing significant)
- Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
