This various artists anthology featured three songs recorded by Richard. Two of them, "Bold Marauder" and "House Un-American Blues Activity Dream," were recorded again for Richard & Mimi's second album, Reflections in a Crystal Wind. Although the Singer Songwriter tracks are not quite as polished as the later versions, they are still very good. The difference between the two versions lies mainly in the absence of Mimi's voice. She was not credited in the liner notes, so we can't be certain that the guitar playing is hers, but it does sound like her style. If these were demo tapes that were recorded for Elektra when Richard and Mimi were shopping around for a label, it would be highly unlikely that Mimi would not play on them. But the tracks may have been recorded under other circumstances, perhaps to publicize Richard as a songwriter and get more of his songs recorded by other people. It's also possible that their Vanguard contract prevented them from recording as a duo, which would explain why Mimi was left out of the credits.

The third song, "Birmingham Sunday," was not recorded again by Richard or Mimi, and is therefore one of Richard Fariña's rarer songs. This is ironic because it is also one of his more famous songs. Sung to the tune of the Scottish ballad, "I Once Loved A Lass," this elegy commemorates the lives and innocence of the four girls who were killed in the vicious bombing of an African-American church in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. Joan Baez had debuted the song at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival and recorded it that year for her album, Joan Baez 5. Her version is also heard at the beginning of Spike Lee's documentary, 4 Little Girls. More recently, Tom Paxton and Anne Hills recorded "Birmingham Sunday" for their 2001 album, Under American Skies.

In addition to the songs, the album is also important for the liner notes Richard wrote, a mini-essay on some of the idiosyncrasies and contradictions of the urban folk revival. Richard's musings on the nature of the folksong as a medium may have been influenced by Marshall McLuhan's controversial book, Understanding Media, published a year before this album.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3    (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the opening side

-         The laminated cover has a slight loss (flaking) of lamination along the opening edge (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers; lamination is just beginning to peel-off along the opening edge; however, since the underlying layer of the cover is ALSO laminated, the peeled-off spots are only a minor visual distraction

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.
