description:
Dick Schory (b. 1931, still with us!) was an on-call, auxiliary percussionist with the Chicago Symphony when in June of 1957 he and his Percussive Art Ensemble recorded “Re-Percussion,” one of the very first LPs pressed in stereo. Following that historic release, he recorded in Orchestra Hall, Chicago, in June, 1958--with his newly created “New Percussion Ensemble”--his “Music for Bang, Baaroom, and Harp,” the first of 3 similar percussion-laden pop albums for RCA in the late 1950s. The album is filled with creative and fun arrangements, all displaying the exaggerated, widely separated instrumental effects, as was the fashion in early stereo. Among the selections are “National Emblem March,” “Ding Dong Polka,” Duel on the Skins,” “April in Paris,” and “The Sheik of Araby.” The LP contains one original work--“Typee,” a piece by Schory and Bobby Christian meant to describe the setting of Melville’s eponymous novel. His 12-man “New Percussion Ensemble” included Christian, as well as Edward Metzenger and several other Chicago Symphony Percussionists. This disc is stunning in its mark-free surfaces and early 4s pressing.
