What It Is:

Seminal early LA punk single from the Dils: I Hate the Rich b/w You're Not Blank on What Records from 1977.

Once labelled as "California's The Clash" for the extreme left-wing ideas expressed in their revolutionary songs, The Dils were part of the very first wave of the L.A. Punk scene. In 1977 What? Records released their debut 7" "I Hate The Rich / You're Not Blank", a real manifesto of their ideas. Two other 7"s followed until their split in 1980.

The Dils were the most political American Punk band active in 1977, They came across as Commies, which was very controversial at the time. Back then, being a pinko was enough to get you killed, or at least attacked in the street. While just about everyone in the L.A. scene zoomed in on The Damned or Sex Pistols as their prime influences,The Dils took notice of The Clash. And they were clearly listening to The Clash a lot, hence the vague resemblance to the Clash on their first two singles, I Hate The Rich and 198 Seconds Of The Dils (both 1977). With scratchy, biscuit-tin production, the four adrenaline-shots on these 45s last less than seven minutes in total and they are essential, directly addressing such topics as the rich-poor divide and the complacency of hippies.

This copy is in really beautiful condition.
