Originally released in 1983, Holy Diver is the debut studio full-length from the titular iconic heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio. Formerly the frontman of Elf and Rainbow, this more metallic solo jaunt and career second wind would come after spending the last few years serving as Ozzy Osbourne's replacement in Black Sabbath, with whom he fronted for 1980's Heaven & Hell and 1981's Mob Rules. It was the latter album's inclusion of Vinny Appice replacing Bill Ward on drums that would pave the early path to Holy Diver, with Dio enlisting Appice, along with Rainbow bassist/keyboardist Jimmy Bain and guitarist Vivian Campbell (who's since gone on to work with Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Thin Lizzy) to form a seasoned group of talent to help pull off an entirely new musical vision. Inspired by the fantasy lyrical themes explored during his tenure with Sabbath, and his self-professed love for Lord Of The Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, as well as the literary works of Sir Walter Scott and the Arthurian tales, Holy Diver is an essential heavy metal fantasy opus, featuring one of the greatest voices in the genre at his most unabashedly inspired. Hitting double platinum in the US as well as silver in the UK, the legendary title-track is easily one of the greatest metal anthems of all time and is worth the price of admission alone.
