"Penina" is certainly one of the most obscure songs written by Paul McCartney.
Back in the '60s McCartney vacationed in the Algarve (Portugal) finding it to be one of the few places he could walk down the streets unrecognized when the Beatles were at their height.
The song "Penina" was written by Paul, in December 1968, at the Hotel Penina and later recorded, first by the band Jota Herre, and, only two months later, by Carlos Mendes, who until 1967 was a member of The Sheiks, also known as the portuguese Beatles.
Paul improvised the song on the spot, while playing at the hotel's bar one night, invited by a member of Jota Herre.
