COVER: VERY GOOD / DISC: VERY GOOD +

JACKET : Moderate surface rub, a few scratches to paper surface; small inch-long split starting on top edge at open end...els clean and presentable

LINER : New plastic liner

DISC : A few surface marks ... no scratches .... no stops or noticable skips ; plays nicely with a low amount of extraneous noise ... a few pops and tics .... mild, near-negligible crackle mostly at edge ... very enjoyable listening ... hard to let this one go!

"When the French 'Jazzbeaux' introduces these sides, his announcement of the principle artist is merely .... 'Et' ....'Dizzy!' At that the applause is spontaneous and warm .... With his own unit around him, Dizzy moves through a colorful combination of themes. Especially good is 'My Man', with a nice backing for Dizzy by Wade Legge on piano. Bill Graham does some fine phrasing behind Dizzy's trumpet on 'Good Bait'. The most fun of all, though, is 'I've Got the Bluest Blues', with everybody getting in their special licks. Joe Carroll does some singing on this one and the entire thing swings. (Brothertown note: a few instances of fine skat work throughout the album).

"Dizzy controls the entire nine tunes, but it must be noted that the contrapuntal methods he is known for are still at work here with Wade Legge, and more particularly, Bill Graham supplying the major part. The group, other than Joe Carroll as vocalist, consists of Lou Hackney on contra bass as indicated in the French introduction, and Al Jones on drums.

"All of the musicians in the group are young, and because of this, easily adaptable to new ideas and they themselves generate a certain original genius. Its a compact and harmonious group and, as is audible from the record, they are well-received by the audience, not only for their talent , but for their amiability on stage as well.

This historic and rare pressing electrified the jazz world in 1957 and it's still has the same level of energy. Upon test playing I was reminded of just how great Gillespie was. He made an indelible mark on the music world. I found it impossible to judge which song was best on this record; they are all great.

To quote Shirley Hoskins again: "The impact of his figure on the jazz world is such that he is almost a myth in musicology. The Beret. The Goatee. The Thick-Rimmed Glasses. the Scatting. The Bop Talk. They all manifest a personality - and they manifest the beginning of an era."

This is just one of what will be a continued offering of rare, interesting and listenable music of many different types. I had an open shop for many years wherein second hand record albums shared space with used books. Even after the shop closed I continued to acquire old vinyl. It is a diverse, maybe even eclectic, collection, genre-wise. There will not be any order in which albums appear here ... it will be the pick of the moment. We hope to present some very tasty treats!
