Description
DODIE STEVENS
PINK SHOELACES (1961)
It doesn't happen very often. With Dodie Stevens you have a youngster who can perform for the whole family. The performer is young enough in age, style and material to flip a juvenile audience, but he (or in this case, she) is also old enough in voice and talent and showmanship to set an adult audience to gaping in awe, roaring its approval, and demanding more. This is the case with Dodie Stevens.
Dodie became an ear-catcher less than a year ago, with a piece of musical nonsense entitled "Pink Shoelaces." She was a little girl, singing presumably to other little girls and boys. But so many of these other little girls and boys started buying her record and urging disc jockeys to play it, that Dodie Stevens just couldn't remain a secret. Parents of teen-agers with record players heard her. Adults with car radios heard her. And before long, television audiences began to see and hear her. By then it was clear that Dodie Stevens was not just another kid performer.
Born Geraldine Pasquale about thirteen years ago, she has become Dodie because no one ever calls a young girl by her right first name, and Stevens because it is the English translation of Pasquale. Her parents-housepainter Jerry Pasquale and his wife, Mary, both under forty - exposed their girl baby to a rich repertoire of Italian songs from the moment she was born. She learned them as fast as she heard them and this, plus an unusual natural voice, led to her first public appearance at the age of five and the subsequent winning of several trophies at contests held in public parks by the Los Angeles Bureau of Music.
Dodie has never given up school for her singing work, nor does she intend to now. Having graduated from Junior High School (an" A" student) she is now starting high school in Temple City, California, her birthplace and home. Following her initial Pink Shoelaces with a couple of other best-selling records- "Five Pennies" and "Yes Sirr-ee" -Dodie has proved that she has the kind of staying power that counts.
This is a super clean original MONO pressing of her 1961 Dot Lp built around that first hit single.
