Description

  • Title: Piano Moods
  • Artist: Dodo Marmarosa Trio  *3 tracks with Charlie Parker Sextet and/or  Erroll Garner Trio
  • Year: 1950
  • Label: Dial  *original Deep Groove pressing
  • Catalog #: 208
  • Track Listing: see photos
  • Vinyl: VG overall play grade  *vinyl still displays a nice sheen with some light spindle marks that created only a couple of isolated ticks on "Dodo Dancer"; portions of record actually play better than VG, but light background surface noise was present throughout most of play (although not overwhelming the music); only real exception was the "Tradewinds" track, which played with more static noise interference and would grade as VG-; condition of labels are as seen in photos
  • Cover: NM  *textured jacket in pristine condition with only real flaw being price written at top lh corner on back; jacket came with both a black and a brown cover
  • Notes: This rare edition was recorded on December 3, 1947. There are 5 tracks with the Dodo Marmarosa Trio (all 4 tracks on Side A & the first track on Side B).  Leader, Dodo Marmarosa, piano; Harry Babasin, bass; Jackie Mills, drums.  The second track on Side B "Ornithology" is listed as the Marmarosa Sextet, but is actually the Charlie Parker Sextet with Charlie Parker, alto sax, although Parker does not solo on this take. The sextet also includes Miles Davis, trumpet; Lucky Thompson, tenor sax; Arvin Garrison, guitar; Victor McMillan, bass; Doc West, drums. The last 2 tracks on Side B is the Erroll Garner Trio. Includes Garner, piano; Red Callender, bass; Doc West, drums.

                                                              GRADING STANDARDS:

Mint (M): A Mint record and cover must both appear to be absolutely perfect in every way. For this reason the grade is seldom used, even with sealed albums where the record itself can only be assumed to be mint.
Near Mint (NM): Otherwise Mint, a nearly perfect record will have only one or two tiny, inconsequential flaws that do not affect play. The disc is shiny and will play without any surface noise. Covers should still be close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident.
Excellent (EX): An excellent record or jacket will have a minimum of audible or visual imperfections. The record has been handled and played very carefully. The disc may have light paper scuffs or spindle marks that do not affect the listening experience.  Covers will show only minor signs of wear or age, and may have a cutout marking and some slight signs of handling or wear, including a tiny bit of ring wear.
Very Good Plus (VG+): The vinyl is considered a good playable copy that may display more signs of wear than an EX grade, but one's overall listening experience will still be positive. Jackets may also display more signs of light storage wear or aging, but not affect the beauty of the artwork.
Very Good (VG): Many of the defects seen in a VG+ record or jacket will be more pronounced on a VG album. The vinyl will display visible signs of handling and playing, and looks like it will play with some audible surface noise, although any such noise should not overwhelm the musical experience. Jackets may display a variety of problems, although none of the flaws should be overwhelming, and limited to no more than a couple.
Good (G): A record in good condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without any repeating "skips", although it will have more severe audible surface noise and scratches than a VG record. Jackets will also have even more pronounced defects than a VG cover. This grade is usually reserved for rarer records that are difficult to find.
