Don McLean is responsible - liable, really - for single-handedly inventing the much-abused singer-songwriter idiom of the late 1960's and early 1970's. Still, with tracks like American Pie - (a song as American as, well, Apple Pie), Vincent (gorgeous ballad dedicated to Vincent Van Gogh and Babylon (the near-Grygorian chant), and with visually captivating cover, this album defeats any and all criticism, and we are inclined to forgive McLean. A great album, for all times and all seasons..
