Label Conditions: All four show moderate, but quite fine spindle marks. Still attractive and fresh looking, the main factor being all four sides play very impressively and clean with very little to fault at all – that never easy on this quite delicate double set.

Rarity: Moderately scarce: mono copies difficult to find that still offer top sound quality, this a delicate set, this one plays beautifully for almost all – a couple or three gentle ticks only which sets the benchmark to be beaten. Also finding the box uncrushed, broken or badly worn is equally difficult. This one is fully intact and unbroken (with no repairs), a little aged, all explained further down. Lastly, this includes ALL 12 insert song sheets with the folded wallet, all in superb condition as seen. A difficult album in all respects, this one impressive and quite elusive as such.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Donovan, an artist who does not always get the full accolades his music truly deserves. His comparison to Dylan is somewhat unfair; this highly individual and gifted Scottish singer is his own man. He wrote some of the most wonderful songs of the late 1960s and his style suited the classic hippy psych era perfectly. None more so than this beautiful double box set, this for me his greatest ever album with every song a gem. Gentle, haunting melodies with atmosphere and genuine beauty and sung with real passion – the male folk genre rarely gets better than this. Beautifully packaged with sublime acid-folk songs, this is fast becoming scarce – complete copies in better conditions are becoming elusive, especially in mono. Those that surface, often in very poor conditions from the harsh ‘Dansette’ era. This lavishly packaged in a two piece box with printing on all the main surfaces. No compromising on quality, even the cards themselves are printed on top quality, watermarked paper. Finding the full set of 12 in near mint condition in a similar ‘wallet’ will always prove a challenge. These here are pretty much that. The box has some wear, but is still fully intact – most I have seen have been in very sorry states. Both records are lovely, the spindle marks do not tell the true story. The playing surfaces are very clean and impressive with audio quality to match with very little unwanted. So a copy many collectors will be pleased to own and certainly hear.

Box (lid) Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: this the most vulnerable part in terms of wear as the outside edges are fully exposed. The top has mostly light patchy rubbing, this mostly near the top edge, this deep lilac surface and picture has no tears or sticker marks, the latter very unusual. The main issue is the right side area has become pale with natural light exposure, so this main outer surface has aged, but still reasonably attractive as the artwork remains very impressive as seen. Next the green inside lid with lyrics and credits, this is practically as-made with nothing to really fault. The inside edges practically the same. The outer edges have light to moderate patchy rubbing, this mainly near the corners, the lower right has rubbed entirely, but quite neatly so. A major plus is all the edges are unbroken or crushed with minimal ‘spread’ e.g. still mostly upright and firm. All corners fully intact as well – the entire album box has NO repairs or enhancements.

Box (tray) Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): again vulnerable, the underside especially. This has a stick-on graphic which is superb, especially as most seen are badly rubbed and damaged. The main surface has a little chipping to the edges and corner tips, but minimal and mostly tiny put in perspective. The outer edge surfaces have minimal wear, and again, fully intact and solid. The inside area parts as pretty much as per above – superb and barely worn at all.

The Wallet: EXCELLENT(++): a super example in deep orange-brown with the artists name printed on the front. Printed on fairly thick matt finished card, the inside has two folded flaps that are shaped near the centre foldline. Both are pristine with no creasing and remain very clean and fresh. The edges are mainly crisp and sharp with no tears and minimal thickening or burring, creasing, any rubbing minimal and still fresh looking.

The Inserts: PRACTICALLY MINT – the 12 multi-coloured inserts are named ‘the first’ to ‘the twelfth’, I have scrutinised them all and most are ‘as made’. Beautifully printed and made on high class thick paper with a bold watermark (see under light). The paper also has a deep weave pattern and a textured feel to the fingers. These are pure class and superbly illustrated by Mick Taylor and Sheena McCall. Twelve inserts, twelve different colours for twelve songs, they are copyrighted ‘Donovan (Music) Ltd’. Remaining very clean, and retaining genuine freshness, devoid of any marks (front or back), (a tiny trace on ‘first’ being very critical), toning, obviously unmounted and uncreased. All edges sharp, all exactly the same size, hence NO trimming or enhancements, all corners are perfect right angles with barely a tip blemish worthy of note. Practically specimen standard examples, these will be immensely difficult to find better and all are gorgeous mini works of art that are nigh-on impossible to reproduce or fake.

The Inner Sleeves: VERY GOOD(+) / NEAR EXCELLENT white polylined inners, one has folds on the corner areas and more aged than the other with paper darkening. The four window circles neat and all edges avoiding splits.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual pair that is are clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed on robust quality vinyl. The labels may have moderate spindle marks, but this is never definitive for number of plays – all four sides offer mostly superb clean sound. Any surface marks are mostly light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. A couple of tiny marks have a couple or three light, brief ticks to politely remind of what is being listened to – a mono double set fast approaching fifty – I doubt if too many available copies will outperform this impressive pair. Visually lovely heavyweight records that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their impressive respective visual gradings with very little to fault. The first record barely anything, the second, as stated above with a tiny few gentle ticks, but little else at all. These offer strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear, this the crucial factor for any more delicate mono record. Even played on my revealing Linn Sondek LP12, these were a joy to play-grade and have no tracking issues*. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, this is a beautifully produced album by Mickie Most. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, overall exceptional clean pressings for a challenging album. Few copies will outperform this early mono pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played modestly – this based on the audio quality rather than speculative spindle mark guessing. Hardly anything of real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these vintage Pye records. This set could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless total silence is mandatory throughout – good luck with that on such a fragile set.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
