Description
Donovan – Sunshine Superman – 1967 mono LP – PYE NPL 18181
This is an original 1967 mono pressing of this classic album produced by Mickie Most which sold only in very small numbers, which explains the enormous rarity of this very hard to find recording.
It has the earliest A-1/B-1 matrix numbers and 1J/1N stampers. The very heavy vinyl is in very good condition indeed – it weighs and incredible 186 grams, which is the heaviest I have seen in 50 years of record collecting. There are surface marks but they produce no more than the occasional background crackle. There is however one jump on the opening track – I have looked at the area under a strong magnifying lens but cannot see the offending mark, but it must be there! Otherwise it demonstrated nothing short of excellent audio in a play test – I used Groove Mechanic software to record to computer for my own purposes, and there are just three clicks to report on side 2 of the footprint.
The dark pink labels are clean and only show spindle marking.
The original poly-lined inner sleeve is remarkable given its age.
The Garrod and Lofthouse tri-fold cover is in very good condition. Light ring wear, but really minimal edge wear – the spine is A1. There are a few very small creases and areas of laminate film lift on the front cover and a hint of curl to the bottom right corner, probably from storage over the years. The reverse unlaminated cover has light surface wear and my name written (neatly) top left – the follies of youth!
All round a fantastic example of this very scarce piece of vinyl from 44 years ago.
